Hey Brad,
I'm assumming its so important in the surf due to the excess line hanging out in the water and adding more drag. You could have a harder time casting farther distances. I have noticed a similar problem wet wading at Chainbridge (the current takes the line) and this could possibly be helpful there. This would also assist with the line getting tangled in the rocks.
