Below the dam, Indian Draft, Smith Bridge, Hidden Valley, etc. There are over 18 miles of public water full of trout compared to just 2-3 miles of private king's land grant water. The best fish are had at Hidden Valley and the dam tailwaters. I've caught dozens of fish in the 18-24" range in both places. Small fish can be had at the Indian draft section. Between Smith Bridge and Indian Draft is the area in most dispute, so if you fish at either access point, go up stream and downstream respectively. There is quite a bit of public water between them, so wade until you see signs and then turn around. Not too hard. Also, almost everywhere but the on-river neighborhood developments will give you access if you just ask nicely. At all access points, there is a map with the off-limits sections in yellow so it's really an easily avoidable problem.

I would check out the Jackson just one county over in Alleghany and Bath counties. It is much less technical and much easier to get a good bite... not to mention very wadeable with plenty of room for a back cast.

Worried that I may be having him jump off the deep end starting his FF career at Mossy, and looking for some good alternatives nearby, in case we need a plan B. Anybody have any recommendations other than Beaver Creek (which I am guessing will be all booked before I get there)?
