{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Good Kayaking Launch Locations

One of my favorite locations on the Virginia side, and near
Alexandria, is Pohick Bay. You can launch either from the Ft. Belvoir
Recreation Center, located on the north end of the bay, or from Pohick
Regional Park on the south side. If you go to ft. Belvoir, the
visitor's entrance is through Tulley Gate (Rt 1) - follow the signs to
to the Archery Range.

Last weekend I launched at Riverside Park just north of Mt. Vernon and
paddled into Little Hunting Creek - and got skunked. It was windy and
choppy but fine once I got into Little Hunting Creek. That launch is
more of a drag-your-boat-down-the-rocks-flood-the-boat-dump-your-gear-
in-the-water kind of launch site. It blows. (I think that's proper
hyphenation). A better launch site off the Parkway is less than a
mile north at River Farm Park (intersection of River Farm Dr and Mt
Vernon Parkway). I could find parking there on Sunday. The first two
are great sites on Pohick. I'll be pushing out from Belvoir into
Accotink Wildlife Refuge this weekend, or maybe past Harry's Island
into the wetlands. There's stripers, snakeheads, and of course LMG,
smallies, perch, gar...the usual suspects.
