I am up here now. If you're planning on wading, there is a small window in the morning before the water gets too high. That's been the pattern lately but check the latest release schedule. Small size 18 - 20 black and olive midges have worked well.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Oct 17 - PLAY with TPFR, CWA, and NoVaTU on the Gunpowder

Where: Gunpowder: Bunker Hill And Mingo Fork Loop

This will be a combined fishing day with Chesapeake Women Anglers and Northern VA Trout Unlimited

If you haven't fished the Gunpowder before this would be a good way to fish part of it.

Gunpowder Falls is a tailwater fishery that fishes well year-round.

Bunker Hill is in the upper section (catch and release) of the river that extends from Prettyboy Reservoir downstream to Blue Mount Road. Access is easy with trails parallel to the river. As this is a tailwater, the temperatures and water levels are relatively constant, check the USGS gage.

You will need a valid Maryland license and remember that felt-soled wading boots are banned in that State.

Hello, I am heading to the South Holston river outside Bristol, TN this weekend. I've done my research on their local fly shop sites and have their recommended flies.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fish Where You Are, Not Where You Ain't

One of TPFR's core values is simple:

Fish where you are, not where you ain't.

It's easy to spend our time dreaming about Montana, Patagonia, Alaska, or wherever else we'd rather have a fly in the water.

This thread is about appreciating the fishing life that's actually around us.

Show us what that looks like for you.

A fish from your local creek. Your tying desk. A lunch-break fishing mission. The rod that lives in your truck. Your kid's first bluegill. A beautiful stretch of water. A skunked afternoon that was still worth getting outside for. Or just a story about something fishing-related that made your week better.

It doesn't have to be exotic. It doesn't have to be Instagram-worthy. And it definitely doesn't have to involve a trophy fish. But if that's where you were fishing this week, that's cool too!

Show or describe for us how you're living the fishing life wherever you happen to be.

Heres my contribution. I've been very fortunate to spend the weekend at a duck hunting lodge called Jenny Island Hunt Club on the eastern shore of the bay. My in laws won a silent auction and invited us.

The lodge is on 100 acres of prime eastern shore marsh land and is not facing the bay on an island of dry ground reinforced with rip rap. It has a dock with a dock light. I found fish under my feet on the dock and helped my son Teddy (who is 7 now) and my FIL catch rockfish jigging off the dock. I also found some fish on a rock pile on the northern side of the jetty. Best fish was a rockfish somewhere north of 25". I also had a 12" speck on for a hot second but it came off. Im at a dozen fish fishing from the shore! 4" paddle tails on 3/8 oz or 1/2 oz jig heads. I brought a kayak but the wind has been too much to take it out (9+ mph). I also had another session fishing a road culvert with a tiny pink paddle tail (3/16th oz I think). The outlet side had juvenile striped bass, largemouth bass, and white perch which were a blast on the ultralight. The upstream side had a big school of baby speckled trout! So cool to see. But the lack of prey is definitely a huge concern right now. A lot of the fish I've caught are skinny and underfed. The baby specks were voracious perhaps due to lack of prey. The excessive menhaden quotas combined with Omega protein exceeding those quotas for a decade has caused significant harm, if not population crash, to the menhaden, and these fish rely on that prey species. So that's a bummer.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: The River Dee, Scotland

Rob, I was just on the Dee and Tay rivers but didn't get the chance to fish them. I can tell you observationally that they looked like the most perfect fly-fishing water you could ask for. I initially looked into fishing there through a service called Salmon Fishing Holidays Scotland who were recommended by the hotel I stayed in the Old Manse of Blair in Pitlochry. I talked to their director, Samantha Datta, and she was lovely. She gave me some info on a fishing trip on the Tay, but I think they guide all over. Could be a good starting point for when you visit.

Also, the spey salmon flies are just fantastic for tying inspiration.

If you're one of our more experienced anglers, check in occasionally and help somebody out. We all started somewhere, and one of the best things TPFR can offer is access to anglers who have already made the mistakes you're about to make.

And you don't have to be a newbie to ask a newbie question. Sometimes the supposedly obvious stuff is exactly what we never learned properly.

On solunar tables, I consider them a factor, but not the only factor to consider if I have the luxury of picking a specific fishing time. My exception is for musky fishing. I've only seen/hooked musky during a forecast bite window and a full or new moon and I confirm those with a guide when scheduling for those fish.

If you're one of our more experienced anglers, check in occasionally and help somebody out. We all started somewhere, and one of the best things TPFR can offer is access to anglers who have already made the mistakes you're about to make.

And you don't have to be a newbie to ask a newbie question. Sometimes the supposedly obvious stuff is exactly what we never learned properly.
