{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: NY Steelhead and Trout

This past spring I fished for 3 days with a guide from Reel Action flyfishing, www.reelactionfly.com. They are nominally out of Rochester but they fish Ohio, PA and NY, all public water. On our trip we stayed in Fredonia where the guides have a house and we fished Ohio and NY. Despite fishing during a great lakes NorEaster, rain and snow in April (weather here in DC was fine), we had a great time and we re-booked for a trip this Nov. Ohio stocks tend to run in the spring, PA and NY in the fall, though there are some areas of NY where there are spring or year around runs.

For the most part these are not big rivers like out west. single handed 7 weights 10-11' or a shorter spey rod work best. We used wolly buggers and dead drift nymphs or egg beads. See troutbeads.com. We used a yellowish egg. All the fishing was done using a "right angle" indicator (bobber)

I definitely recommend a guide the first time you go. The fishing is very different from west coast steelhead, or anything else for that matter.

Hi all!

I've been following this group for a while but this if my first time posting. I was wondering if anyone had any information on the trout and steelhead fishing in upstate New York (best time to go, places to go, flies to bring). I'm planning on taking a road trip up there this fall sometime in November (anyone is welcome to join) and just wanted to get some info from DC's largest collection of fly anglers.

On another note, I run a website that gives updates and fishing reports on Potomac River fly fishing (flytimesDC.com), check it out when you get a chance!

Thanks,
Remick
