-The beginner's table will be teaching Bi-visibles, an old-school dry fly that works for a lot of species in warm and cold water. The point of this will to teach the proper selection, preparation, and winding of hackles for dry flies, a skill with lots of applications in fly-tying. I'll be running the beginner's table.
-Also at this Beer Tie, we will be holding our first IRON VISE. This is a contest modeled on the Iron Chef television series: we'll have a Secret Ingredient, namely some unusual material available for tying (Dan's beard hair has already been suggested, thanks). Folks who want to play will incorporate the Secret Ingredient into a fly, which they will submit to the panel of judges. Towards the end of the evening the judges will pick some winners based on a) artistic merit, b) fishability. A third category will be c) the first person to catch a fish on their IRON VISE fly, to be decided by posting a photo of fish and fly to the group. You can use whatever materials you want in your fly, in addition to the Secret Ingredient, but the judges will look more favorably on flies that build on the Secret Ingredient, rather than trying to minimize or mask it. Winners will win an as-yet undetermined prize, mostly bragging rights but probably also what's left of the Secret Ingredient.
