{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Lake Anna

Lake Anna is nuts on the weekend.  It is a huge pain in the butt to try to fish it when the water skis, jet skis, power boaters, and all the other crazy people on the lake.  The best bet is to fish during the week days.

The bridges hold crappie and they will bite the fly well.  I accidently caught a striper that was 26" on my flyrod when I was crappie fishing.  The bass there bite well but they get a lot of fishing pressure too.  The good part is that they don't see many flies.

Hey Matt,

Thanks for the heads up.  I was informed about that a little bit ago and I'm still blushing from the realization.  :)

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} A Good Day on the Upper Potomac

I launched the kayak out of Riverbend Park today.  I paddled up stream for a while and started fishing.

The first fly I started with was a Shannon's streamer.  The second cast in I caught a 14" smallmouth.  After a while I switched flies to a yellow popper and I caught a 12" smallmouth.  When that fly went cold (a few bluegills were also caught) I paddled to a different location.  I found this place where the current was flowing right by some heavy grass beds.  I started fishing a Shenk's white streamer and I caught a 13" smallmouth quickly.  I then swtiched to a Dave's Hopper and I caught two more smallmouth that were 14" and 15".  I also caught another 12" smallmouth out of that location on the hopper.  After I left that location I switched back to a Shenk's White Streamer and I was fishing another location close to the first one.  On the third cast from the switch I caught a 16" smallmouth bass.

All in all it was a very productive day on the river.  The fish I caught all appeared to be very healthy and a few of them were fat.  The water was very clear and flowing nicely.

I am really hoping that the remnants of Isaac steer clear of this area.  I am supposed to go to the Shenandoah River for a weekend next weekend and do a float.

FYI turkey run is above little falls therefore doesn't have any tidal influence. Haven't been there myself but Iv'e heard some good reports on smallmouth there.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: October Smallmouth Float

I recently did an 8ish mile float on the doah and that allowed us to stop and hit the fishier holes thoroughly on a full day float.  However, there were two large stretches which were about 2 miles in total that we paddled through so it does depend on the section you float and how much you want to stop.  I'd say 12-14mi is very doable.

And just a thought depending on how green your buddy is -- I started teaching my sister on fly this summer.  Having a light spin rod handy can be a nice reprieve from the wind knots and endless false casting associated with learning on fly (and my poor instruction).  It definitely helped keep her from getting too fatigued and frustrated in the beginning.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Anyone have any luck over at Turkey Run recently?

I have plans for fishing Roaches Run on Saturday around 5PM but I may go to Turkey Run instead.  I know Roaches Run is mentioned all the time (probably for good reason) and I have yet to actually fish it (always go to gravelly for outgoing tide) but I have not heard anyone mention Turkey Run recently.   I will be fishing right in the middle of the in coming tide which could work for Roaches but I'm not sure how it will be for Turkey.

I'm not sure if there is a specific reason for the absence of Turkey Run reports or what.  I just like the feel of being away from traffic/ people but actually being just out of the city.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: October Smallmouth Float

Thanks Steve for the info. I think were going to try earlier. My friend who's coming is fairly new to fly fishing, so I want it to be a positive experience for him, and more active fish will add that. Plus warmer weather will make camping more enjoyable too.

We're doing a 2 day float. Probably float for 8 hours the first day, and then 5 hours the second day. How many miles should we plan float for this time?
(including extra time for breaks, and wading particular spots.) I plan to float fish most of it though. I'm thinking 12-14 miles total. What do you think?

I think I'm going to do the Pecos for the first leg, because it will only take me 2 hours from the airport and is an hour from Santa Fe (my flight gets in at 9pm, hoping to have my tent up on site by 11:30).  Four hours might be a bit much, but if I can squeeze it maybe I'll head to the San Juan on Sunday morning.  I do really like the idea of getting two rivers in.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Lake Anna

Hi Jeff,
I'm new to the forums so let me take a moment to say I'm very excited and impressed by the amount of information and help the TPFR members offer each other. On other forums I've been on, "spot-burning" was considered a no-no, (specifically telling people about spots to fish, because of lurkers or a philosophy about "earning" the knowledge). Seems there's more openness on sharing here so... I hope I'm not breaking a forum rule here, but because Lake Anna is complex and in some places dangerous, I want to give some specific advice for members.

First, my Dad is a spin fishermen on Lake Anna and has earned a coveted place of respect among the lake's hardcore striper fishermen who fish the southeastern part of the lake around Dike 3. We often fish Lake Anna together and I've learned a few things that could be useful to you so you enjoy your weekend.

  1. If you want to hit a good productive Bass flat, try kayaking around Dike 3 on the both the SE part of the lake known as the "cool side". But PLEASE be careful because the outflow (about 50' off the bridge) from the power plant has created a large turbulent bubble just off the Dike 3 bridge. It is unpredictable and the current is swift and dangerous--stay to the edge of the bubble, don't attempt to kayak across it.
  2. The good thing about the bubble, however, is that in the right time of year, it holds very nice sized Stripers and if you stay to the edge and cast into it with a sinktip and or good size clouser minnow to target Stripers and Bass. Earlier is better from 6am to 10am. This time of year, the stripers may be out deep, but you might find holdovers taking advantage of the bubble's current.
  3. On the other side of Dike 3, the "warm side", I don't believe you can put-in because its private, but you can fish it from the dike (though hard for fly casting). But you can wade it, just south of the inflow is a very large flat. If there's been no rain, you'll be able to see the bottom and walk accordingly. You'll see a little island, stay to the left of it and wade around it as there is a deep hole between the road and the island. The island is a good place to stash your lunch or rest on. There are smallies and largemouth here, but be wary of the drop-off on the Northside of the flat near the bridget.
  4. Here is a video that shows you images of the bridge from the "cool side" so you can recognize it:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq3cxaVtc7w
  5. The park rangers do patrol so make sure you have your license handy.

Tight lines!

Okay, that sounds great!  I know where Fletcher's boathouse is -- been there many times.  Weird turn in by car, easy turn in by bicycle ;).

Do you cast near the parking lot (where the "white" house thing is) or do you go under the tunnel to the "boat" side to cast over there?

Typical bass stuff will work, try throwing white/grey #4 clousers and see if you can pick up some stripers, largemouth, and crappie.  The real trick this weekend is going to be finding someplace that doesn't resemble a zoo.  Anna gets a ton of recreational use (speedboats, jetskis, water skiers, that kind of thing) on long weekends.  Might be a good time to fish way early and way late and have a mid-day siesta.

Question:  do you guys usually cast from the bank, or do you take boats out for these Sunday outings? I'd be interested but don't know exactly where you are casting.

Anyone can just show up with their fly rod?  Even ones who aren't very good?  ;)

Thanks,

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: October Smallmouth Float

I have minimal first-hand experience that time of year, but I do have a habit of reading entirely too much so take my advice fwiw.

From what I've read, the water temps drop considerably in Oct so you won't get much of a topwater bite but the smallies are still active into Nov.  Your focus will switch from the shallows to the deeper pools so you'll be throwing streamers mainly.  Rarely will these pools and cuts be any deeper than 6-8 ft (on the doah) so a wet-tip streamer line, small sinktip, or polyleader could help get down in the deeper sections.  Otherwise a weighted fly and a good mend should get you down in the feeding zones.  With the colder temps the fish will also respond to slower presentations.

The month of September is a transition period so depending on weather and water temps you can still get a variety of different bites.  Best bet is to take a bit of everything with you, from poppers and terrestrials to streamers in a variety of weights.  Trial and error is the name of the game.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} October Smallmouth Float

My friends and I are planning an overnight float trip on the Potomac, Shenandoah, or Rappahannock later this September or early October. It turns out some of them are only available  October 13-14th. I was hoping on doing something earlier than that. What do you guys think? Do you think smallmouth will still be active by this time? Any suggestions on a particular river/section at his time? I know it's hard to predict what the conditions will be like, but I figure people on this board have more experience than I do.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Homemade Fly Tying Station

What you have made is very, very awesome. Needs stickers.=)

Some other tricks:
You can get magnetic strips and sheets at craft stores. They work
swimmingly as hook/fly holders.

A ruler of some sort and a hook/hackle gauge are good things to put on
the flat deck of the station.

You can get velcro tabs at craft and home supply stores. Then you can
velcro tools, bead boxes, etc to the station.

Add a "teacup hook" for making dubbing brushes and leaders.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Owens Creek & Big Hunting Creek

Hey Guys I was wondering anyone had recently been by Owens Creek or Big Hunting Creek in Frederick County? I was thinking about heading up there on Saturday or Sunday try for some trout. Anyone know how these streams are looking?

BTW, I did a 7 mile float trip this past weekend on the Shenandoah with my father. We really got into the sunnies and smallmouth, we must caught over 50 smallmouth and 75 sunnies. We stayed at a local campsite in Luray, right on the water. It was called Outlanders, check it out if you plan on camping down that way. It was really nice. Anyways catch you guys later.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: New Mexico Fly Fishing

If its a Sunday morning DIY, I would suggest parking at the Texas Hole lot and heading towards the damn.  I had some success at the Kiddie Hole, but its combat fishing.  The closer you get to the dam, the less anglers you'll see.  Last year we stayed at Fisheads, across the street from Abe's.  All the folks at Fisheads know the river, the bugs, the spots, and will offer to help get you rigged up.  Pretty cool to catch 20inch fish on size 20 flies.

Good luck.

Hi all, I'm new to the group, and back from a long fly fishing hiatus.  Dan suggested I give the group a shoutout to see if anyone had any experience fishing in New Mexico.

My buddy is getting married in Santa Fe this weekend, and I'm planning to get away for a few days to get some fishing in.  I spoke to a park service ranger, who recommended checking out either Cowles on the Pecos River (in Santa Fe National Forest) or Cow Creek.  Has anyone fished anywhere in this area?  Any recommendations about, well, anything?

If I manage to land a fish this trip, it will be my first on a fly in about a decade, so I'm quite excited.  Hopefully when I get back I'll get a chance to meet more of the group for some more local fishing.

Copying this over from a reply to the digest in case others are interested:

Re New Mexico fishing out of Santa Fe, Cow Creek is a lovely piece of water and only an hour or so away by car  Unfortunately, some of the best stretches run through two private ranches which charge hefty fishing fees.  Cow Creek Ranch is an all-inclusive lodge experience.  The Bar X Bar ranch (I think that's the name)  has day fishing but requires (at least it used to) the use of a guide (at least for the first day.)  Maybe this late in the season, the Bar X Bar would allow some self-guiding. Patterns on Cow Creek are not complicated because the fish aren't generally picky. The usual dry assortment works fine: Adams, blue-wing olive (cloudy or rainy days), terrestrials,  olive, brown and black caddises; attractors like Humpy, Irresistible, Stimulator, Royal Wulff etc. and for nymphs, pheasant tails and Hare's Ears plus caddis larva are fine.

Todd,

Nice tying desk. I've had the need for a tying desk like that, but
yours looks practical and gives me some ideas.

Does anyone have a craft store source for antron yarn.

I have some old Aunt Lydia's sparkle yarn, but was looking for some more
white antron. I've heard that there wasn't much demand for the antron
yarn from traditional sources, so it's now it's become much harder to
find other than the small packages at the fly shop.

I agree that there are some winners and some losers when it comes to
craft store materials. Knowing the brand helps some, but companies
change their suppliers over time and the quality can change.

Rob, thanks for the heads up.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} New Mexico Fly Fishing

Can only confirm the great fishing on the San Juan anytime of the year. Even better in the winter when the crowds are thinned. Abe's Fly Shop will get you squared away on everything. Think small. This is one of the places where you can actually get to fish size 28-30 midges for 20 inch rainbows. Unfortunately some fish will have been caught multiple times.
It's worth the drive if you haven't experienced it before.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Dollar store chenille

Rob,

Let us know also if the dye holds up in water, not all dyes are intended for submersion in water and will bleed/fade quickly.  I used to have a foam fly box that looked like a tie-dye shirt inside because of this.  Having sourced many materials from non-fly shop stores in the past, I have definitely found some winners and losers.  I once bought the MOTHERLOAD of tinsel in all kinds of colors right after Christmas when it was like .50 cents per hank at Wal-Mart.  It looked and felt exactly like Flashabou.  I later found out that it got brittle in salt water and snapped off quickly while fishing, but of course, not until AFTER I had tied about 2-dozen Deceivers and a dozen or so Surf Candies with it.  Oh well, I still caught plenty of fish with those flies even without the flash, but I was bummed that my lifetime supply of tinsel was for not.  So, keep us posted, and if it holds up, bring some to the next BEER TIE along with some of your bugs!!!  (Next BEER TIE is September 10 by the way!)
