So this week has been a week of tidal basin afterwork, during the day,
and on the weekend. I took Friday off and worked my way from lock 7
to chain bridge on the C&O canal intent of chasing carp. After having
a monster straighten my hook, I decided it was late enough to avoid
the traffic and hit the tidal basin. I had been several times this
week afterwork, and saw a lot of snakeheads. So many in fact that I
tired my own killifish fly. I worked the entrance catching several
perch and stripers before I saw my fish rise. These guys almost hover
to the surface, take a quick gulp and vanish in a flash. I decided to
treat it as sight fishing, and waited until I saw a pare rising under
the bridge. A quick role cast and I dropped the fly between the two.
I made two twitches not strips, and the larger of the two slammed the
fly. As soon as I had the hook set, the fish went for the bottom and
the folks on bridge decided I should answer their questions. LOL I
worked the fish back up and netted it tossing it over my shoulder and
was SHOCKED at how big it really was.
I'm gonna try to post a picture, but I used my rod at the guide and
when I got home I measured 33". Maybe the biggest fish I have ever
caught in freshwater.
