Sinking lines do cast differently than a floating lines. When using a sinking line or a weight fly, I use an oval or belgian cast.
The oval happens on two planes - you make a horizontal backcast, and then reposition the rod up and make a more vertical forward cast.
It's a continuous motion cast. The fly line glides under the rod tip and then curves up as you reposition the rod. Practice by drawing the oval with your fingertip.
With a sinking line, also try and make fewer false casts, and throw a more open loop on the forward cast. If you want more distance add a haul and aim higher on your release.
If you stop by the river on Sunday morning, or another time, I will be glad to show you.

John,
Got a sinking line from you guys a few weeks back. Danny put on myreel.
Was fishing @ Chain Bridge few weeks back, with those pink/white metal
flies for shad on my 8 wt. Had trouble with my long casts.
Any generic idea what I was doing wrong?
I'm normally pretty good with dry flies, normal line.
Could it have been new line, or the shad flies?
