muddy water, you name it. Not today. Perfect tide and perfect
conditions this morning near Chain Bridge. Caught hickories, white
perch, and a few baby stripers all morning until my arms were tired.
Shad were at various depths. First they were deep, then as a fog bank
rolled through they came up in the water column and started clobbering
my fly at the start of the swing in cross-current casts. They were
color fickle. Chart/white at first, then shutoff... switch to red/
white and right back in business... shutoff... pause.. plain white..
Some of the perch were good sized. Hooked a fish on every decent
presentation.
Also, saw the biggest snakehead yet in my limited experience with
them. Swam right past the rock I was on. Had to be >36". Threw all
kinds of flies at it. No joy. It had of course seen me. Ran into a
guy who was a bigtime snakehead aficionado. Claimed to have hauled a
stringer of 8 snakeheads yesterday which weighed a total of 76 lbs.
He using plastic worms and/or and snagging them with treble hooks.
Says they cook up very well. Of course they are apex predators in the
Potomac, so I'd be careful about eating too much... But it sounds like
it's worth a try.
Now I'll start looking for stripers.
