If you take the time to learn the fishery, you can catch monster pre-spawn smallmouth around the mid-Atlantic as well. The season for them in usually late March to late April (depending which rivers you're targeting).
I started a blog a few months back and we did a three part series on pre-spawn smallmouth. I think there may be some helpful info that could easily be applied to the Great Lakes tributaries as well as tributaries to large river systems around here.
