Penns has come up a few times. As great as it is, it's really far out of your way. Spring Creek could work - easier to fish solo than the Little J.  Still a bit east of the travel route but not by a whole lot.

Despite attending PSU only 5 years ago, all of my fly fishing connections in that area have since moved away - can't help you there.

Yep Little Juniata is on the way, and it's tied for my favorite stream in PA, the other being Penn's Creek which you are also nearby while you're up there. Penn's is over at Coburn, PA, my favorite spots on the Little J are by Barree, PA.

Little J is more of a freestone stream with "limestone influence," while Penn's is a true limestone spring creek. Little J is bigger and more prone to fluctuations in water levels, so if that's a concern when you go then Penn's may be the better option. Penn's is no pushover though, and both get a fair amount of pressure.

Beginning of May you will likely see Sulphurs and may see some other big mayflies like March Browns flying around, and perhaps Blue Wing Olives. Consult a hatch chart, for sure.
