I'm here now. Fish at outflow are stacked up and feeding agressively. No rod as in wifes car waiting for her plane. Can't determine species. Wperch or schoolies.

I've seen people park on grass by ramp from 395 north. Seen people walk in from train tracks to fish and cast net from hot water outflow. Seen a boat try to go under from gravelly at outgoing tide???

Use google earth to find spots!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Roaches run by DCA....

My condo apartment overlooks Roaches Run and I watch folks fishing through my binoculars all the time. (Wave if you are one of them!). Apart from those in kayaks, canoes and john boats, the shore is fishable on both sides (road and railway line). There are also frequent waders and the water is wadeable just about all over, typically not exceeding waist height right out in the middle.

Only access is into the parking area from the GW Parkway going South. Exiting you have to go south on the Parkway also. Then you can escape north or south through National Airport.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Virginia Fly Fishing and Wine Festival Report

Kudos to all involved in making TPFR (and spey casting and FFF and the Potomac River watershed and fly tying and the Antietam club) an integral and growing part of the VA Fly Fishing Festival. Also, a shoutout to Rob Snowhite for his informative, packed power point talk on shad fishing the Potomac and Rapp. Great spey technique demos from Master Casters Dan and John.

I am writing to report the great weekend we had at the 12th annual Virginia Fly Fishing and Wine Festival, where TPFR/FFF was a Bronze Level Sponsor with a 20'x30' dedicated tent. First off, I would like to thank all of our volunteers from TPFR, including Dan & Melody Davala, John Bilotta, Trent Jones, Tom & Tracy Urman, Miles Townes and myself.

On Saturday, we had great weather and a great turnout, but on Sunday the weather was a bit of a damper with chilly temperatures and steady rain. Both days, Dan and John taught a paid lesson in spey casting before the festival kicked off while our other volunteers set up our tent and drank copious amounts of coffee. Inside of our spacious tent we had our new 40" HD TV playing a continuous loop of a casting demonstration video, a laptop to sign people up for free one year FFF memberships, a fly tying table with five vices to help teach kids and beginners to tie flies and an assortment of promotional materials for TPFR and the FFF. In addition to this main tent, we had a satellite tent set up by The Bobs of Antietam Fly Anglers, another FFF Charter Club that also helped offset some of our costs this year, dedicated to free casting lessons from our six FFF Certified Casting Instructors in attendance. Throughout the days, we interacted with many people, getting nearly 50 people signed up with free memberships to the FFF, helping dozens of people tie their first flies and improving the casting of a few more, as well as interacting with several from the DC area that had not yet heard of TPFR. In addition to this interaction, Dan and John held two organized spey casting demos on the water and we held a seminar on how to become an FFF Certified Casting Instructor each day.

I didn't manage to take any pictures, but I believe that Tom and Melody took some that they may want to add to this post.

Thanks everyone again,
Dalton

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: A new rod

100% agree with EVERYTHING Richie just said.  Well put and very thorough Richie, thanks!  Could not have been stated better.  I start a lot of people off with 9' 6-weights when they have no idea what they want to do but it includes Trout and Bass.  Your post stated trout as the focus, so I think a 5 weight is the best choice.  Many of us started with a 5 and caught tons of fish in a lot of places before getting anything else.  Besides, ANY 5 weight rod on the market today can easily cast a 7 weight line, so when you need to throw the hair bugs in the summer time, you can just get another line to take care of the delivery problem.  Pulling the fish out of the weeds will be a challenge on the lighter rod, but doable.  Like Richie said, I'd steer him toward a good 5-weight!

RE: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: A new rod

Danny,

When bass fishing, both large and smallmouth, your main problem is not fighting the fish, but delivering the fly.  Smallmouth bass will eat anything from small poppers and mayflies to large crayfish and baitfish patterns.  Largemouth fishing is traditionally a large fly game.  All of those patterns tend to create wind resistance when casting them and most large deer hair poppers can’t be thrown on anything less than a 6-weight rod (barely).

Back to fighting the fish, smallmouth bass can be fun on lighter weight rods, but really lifting and moving them out of deep holes or cover can really put a bend in your rod.  Largemouth bass in the summer months live in the Hydrilla and lily pads and if you hook one, just fighting to get them out of the grass can be a real pain, so stout rods help here also.

I’ve fished light and small rods and due to the size of the Potomac and the size of the fish, I routinely fish a 6-weight for smallmouth, carp, and shad, and an 8-weight for largemouth bass.

To answer your original question, trout in central VA with the occasional panfish and bass should be a piece of cake – Either a 8.5’ or 9’ 5-weight will get him catching everything he wants, both locally and throughout the rest of the US.  Trout fisherman tend to travel west and north for more trout, so this will be able to be used in the Catskills, central PA, and out west in Montana, Idaho, Colorado, and Idaho.  It can be used to throw smaller flies at smallmouth bass as well.

If he’s going to be focused more on dry flies or central VA streams with lots of overhanging vegetation, chose the shorter rod, but I’d still have him stick with the 9’ rod.  This is his first fly rod, so he’s going to want it to be as versatile as possible.

Do not look at anything smaller than a 4-weight as it will lengthen his learning curve and limit his choices.

There are lots of decent rods available.  Look for an outfit that’s in his price range from a reputable dealer.  Going to Wally World and grabbing the cheapest outfit because it was on sale has led to lots of buyer’s remorse and rods collecting dust in the closet.

A 2 weight is more than enough for Bass - both Large and Small mouth. UL is the way to go for pretty much any freshwater stuff. Just make sure you match the tippet and leader and he/you will be amazed at the finite control and amazing action you get on a 2 or ought weight. I have caught hundreds of 3+ lb Largemouths on an ought weight with no problems.

If he is after bass at all I would suggest a 7 weight.  That is the weight that I used for smallmouth bass.  It helps turn the larger flies over better to have the weight.  Also, a 20" Smallmouth is a beast!

Your rod was likely built for use with silk fly lines and has much
smaller guides than a modern rod. Silk lines, the predecessor of the
aerodynamic PVC floatillas most of us are launching today, are thinner
and guides were smaller to match. You have a few options. Buy an
expensive high maintenance silk line. Pick up a cortland sylk line
which is a made to imitate silk and as such has a thinner diameter. Or
you could strip, re-wrap, and revarnish the rod with larger guides.
I've refinished several older rods. It's a rewarding but time
consuming venture. If you want to go that route I would be happy to
provide some insight on steps, etc. Just shoot me an email.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Roaches run by DCA....

I've caught Bass (LM and SM), Catfish, Longnose Gar, Snakehead, and panfish from there, most while wading. I've even heard about someone pulling a Waleye out of there earlier this Spring.

It's a lot of fun, and worth checking out.

And here's a short video of one of the smaller bass I caught there in March:

With such low flow  I've had great results spin casting on a drift  from north of the boathouse about 1/2 mile for Hshad and Schoolie Stripers. No reason you shouldn't. Cast towards DC and slow the retrieve keeping your drift rate in mind. The fish seem to be congregating in deeper spots. Once you are even with the boathouse row back up and do it again. Remember there is less current along the DC shoreline so getting back upriver is not as difficult.

Aaron,  Congratulations on the catches.  Those catfish are great fun on
a fly rod, aren't they.

As to the "action" of your old rod.  If the guides are rusted or pitted,
you should probably avoid using it.  The old guides will act like
sandpaper or little knives on your fly line and really tear it up fast.
The test someone has told me is if you can pass pantyhose through the
guide without it snagging, it is ok.  If it snags and causes a run, you
shouldn't use it.  I've never tested it because I don't have old nylons
hanging around.

This rod probably isn't worth putting new guides on, but that is the
solution.  Cutting off the old guides and putting new chrome plated
snake guides on.
If you want to try and smooth the existing guides, I would try fine
steel wool to get rid of the rust and pitted areas.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} SNP Trip Report

Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions for my first time fly-fishing in SNP. The information proved very valuable!

After a frigid Friday night of camping at Big Meadows, I drove with my wife and another couple to the Limberlost trail parking lot (between mile poste 42 and 43) and set out along the White Oak Canyon trail. With the rest of the party being non-anglers, I didn't have as much time as I would have liked to explore the deeper pools, but I did have a chance to stop and fish few of them. Caught two Brookies in the same pool (one about 9"), and enjoyed showing the rest of the hiking party that there were in fact fish in the stream (despite much initial disbelief and poking fun at me for fishing "on a mountain"). As suggested, I used a 10-foot-long leader and dropped a prince nymph about 12 inches below a royal wolf, using 6X tippet. Fished this from a 7'-6" 4wt. I probably could have hooked into a dozen more fish if I had the whole day to myself. Overall, a great hike, and a fun way to introduce some friends to fly fishing. I'll definitely be back!

Thanks,
Ryan

I just love the sitcomy but true idea that some family in another country has a photo of me posing with a fish and I couldn't get the same photo.

Aaron,

Your post got caught in the "moderator's cue" for some reason, kind of like when a non-spam email gets stuck in a spam filter.  It looked like you had made the same (duplicate) post several times with only minor modifications, trying to get it to post.  Many times when a post gets stuck in moderation, a poster will make several attempts in a row and they all stack up waiting for approval.  Usually, I will just scan to see if that is the case and allow the latest one through rather than posting all of them to avoid multiple/duplicate posts.  There was nothing inappropriate at all, my apologies if something was left out or if the posts were in fact, all different.  They looked 99% the same to me.  I definitely do not and will not ever "edit" anything written by a member.  I thought it was a great story too, by the way!

Thanks for the information, I will double check the loops but from first glance I do not see any rust or dents.  This pole has spent the last 50+ years in it's original case in a basement.  I don't think it was ever used until now.  UI will definately check out your suggestions.

On a side note, Were you both able to read my whole story about the events on that night  (the parts before the P.S.) ?  After writting and then posting it, It looks like someone deleted it from the forum on two occasions.  It has not shown up on my computer at all but both of you guys seemed to have seen atleast part of it.  Nothing on it seemed inappropriate to me in any way but I don't know why else it would have been removed.

For advise on care of old bamboo rods and just some background on the
type of rod you have, search the old posts on Clarks Classic Rod forum.
