{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Where to fish?

Kevin:

Knowing your predicament of trying to fish by foot in the DC area and having tried all of these locations myself I would highly, highly suggest fishing four mile run along the south bank. You will be able to access a number of areas of structure along the overpasses where route 1 crosses the run. Depending, on some rare days the water turns crystal clear and you are able to spot the fish from the overpasses. Who doesn't enjoy sight fishing largemouth, catfish, and carp. from the north side you may be able to wade into the water for a number of yards depending on the section, but I would highly recommend roll casting you way down the south bank with a top water popper early in the moring to test your luck, especially at the changing of the tides.

best of luck wetting the line,
Mike

Thanks so much.  I had heard about Maryland lakes but wasn't sure where they were.

Kevin,
Don't forget that the area is blessed with several good bass lakes, most easily explorable on foot, others with a rental kayak, to get into largemouth bass and panfish. MD option include Piney Run to Little Seneca. While not tidal, they're part of the system and its good to have options when rivers are repeatedly blown.

Cheers

If you can get out of the DC area a bit, I hear that the North Fork of the Shenandoah is fishing well.

I'm an inexperienced fly fisherman finally realizing that wading for smallies in the Potomac is still weeks away at best. Look for suggestions as to where to fish under the current conditions.  From reading this forums and other DC-specific sites, I have come up with the following possibilities but have questions on each.  Would appreciate any help you real fishermen can offer.

Tidal Basin - assume it is clearing up and early morning is best time.  If I don't have the flies in the most recent post, can I make do with clouser minnows?  Can I use a sinking leader on floating line?  (I have full sink for the shad season, but I'm not very good at casting it)

Gravelly Point - understanding that I need to fish late evening/ night on a falling tide, is it worth trying?  Again, can I make do with sinking leader and clouser minnows, or do I need full sink.

Four Mile Run - Is it OK as long as there isn't a coastal flood advisory?  Any advice on line/leader/flies?

Sorry to be such a newb, but once again appreciate any advice.

Thanks
