As the "no fishing" signs are near the docks, I suppose they want to keep the boat rental area free of old lines, bait, and such?
As far as the fishing. I have never bottom fished there. But I have caught white and yellow perch, largemouth, smallmouth and striped bass, I know there are some decent sized carp...and probably anything else that swims in this area. It was probably a large catfish that took my jig to the middle of the lake last year. I fought it on 4lb. spinning gear for 45 minutes till the hook eventually pulled.

Follow up question:
What's the deal with all the no fishing signs? Is the western half of the basin where there's a guardrail barrier off limits until you cross the bridge towards the Jefferson Memorial?
