I've been using an REI or EMS hip pack (I've used it so long I've forgotten which brand) for years and it's not SIMMS but it does the trick, and it was $40. Maybe he could afford one of those to hold him over.

I'd encourage him to write SIMMS about what happened and that he's a loyal customer. They may send him a freebie replacement.
