If you're a Harpers Ferry guy, it's been a tough year!  We need that river to drop.

Re your question, you will find a variety of opinions, of course, but of all my lines (floater, intermediate, sink-tip, full sink or sinking head), I use my intermediate the least.  For my 8-weight, the two lines I can't live without are a floater and a 250-grain 25- or 30-foot sinking head line (others prefer a 300-grain).  I use that sinking line as my go-to for the shad run and in the Bay and it goes on most trips with me.

For what you are describing, though, I'm not sure that's the fit for you.  If you are talking smallies down deep around where you live, I think maybe more of a 15-foot sink tip would be better.

You will find other opinions, but I really do not use my intermediates much.  In the rivers, for the need to get down deep, in my opinion, they don't sink fast enough and the current quickly has them out of the zone.  And in the Bay, I either want to be on top, or down too deep too fast for an intermediate.

On the onthe question, I've got an 8wt I use for big bass bugs with a floating line on it. I'm looking at getting a line for the spare spool to use in deeper waters and when the smallies are down deep. So what kind of line and sink rate do you guys recommend? Sink rate and full/intermediate? I'm looking for something that will be a jack of all trades sort of line, and was leaning towards a 2-3" per second intermediate line.
