Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Smoke Hole Cayon WV

Also, Mike at Orvis Arlington knows Smoke Hole pretty well.

Worst case scenario, if flow is too low and you're not seeing fish (I'm not sure whether/how much that spot has been stocked yet this year), you could just pay to fish at nearby Harman's log cabins ($50/day). Those fish will eat anything.

Yes, many times.  Plenty of good water in that stretch, just not sure if I've fished it with water as low as it current is but can imagine that the fish will be pretty concentrated.  Feel free to email directly with any other questions.  Between the history and geography, it's one of my favorite areas to poke around.

Hi and thanks for the info! I'm armed with some stimulaters, egg patterns, worms, and flashy midges and small streamers so I should be in good shape. Thanks for the input.

Have you fished the C&R section of the river?

Heck yeah!  That place is beautiful.

It's bigger water, wide with obvious holding spots and some that are not so obvious.  Midges, small wets, pats rubber legs, and little flashy bugs sz16-18 have worked well but also bring a few egg and worm patterns too.  If you are into streamer fishing, yellow patterns or patterns that mimic small brown trout get attention from other browns too.  Even though that area has probably gotten it's first frost, a hopper dropper would be a good rig to start with to keep you from hanging up in the low water.

I'm looking to fish the South Fork of the Potomac at Smoke Hole Canyon next weekend and was wondering if any one had any experience fishing this area. I plan to stay at the Big Bend Campsite and fish the C&R section of the river. Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks!
