{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Shad fishing

Hey fly rodders. I have been out a few times already for the shad run with no luck. I know I have to doing something wrong because I haven't even gotten a bite. If anyone have any tips on lures, techniques or anything else I can do to catch some shad on the fly would really be appreciated. Thanks peeps

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Virginia Fishing and Wine Festival April 9-10 in Doswell, VA

The Virginia Fly Fishing and Wine Festival is coming up next weekend, April 9-10, at a new location in Doswell, VA. Many of you know about the festival and have been to the old grounds in Waynesboro; this year Beau has moved it to Meadow Event Park in Doswell, VA to an indoor facility. If you aren't familiar with the festival, it's a fishing show with vendors, classes, and fly fishing "celebrities", with the added benefit of free wine tastings!

Check their website here for more info: http://www.vaflyfishingfestival.com

I'll be at the IFFF booth Saturday and Sunday morning, stop by and say hi if you're around, and if really want to help out and promote IFFF/TPFR by volunteering at the booth shoot me an e-mail.

Dalton

Water is very low below chain bridge and above Arizona road.

Slow today. I was fishing on the Fletcher's side, upstream from the Cove from shore. Very few splashes, caught 2 shad around 9:00am, then nothing for 2 hours. Did catch what google tells me was a quillback sucker - hooked him in the face, not sure if he was trying to eat the shad fly or I just fouled him.

It looked like water was coming in by Fletcher's this morning. Not sure where that is in terms of locks, I guess it's above Lock 5.

They will help you load your gear and maybe give you a push but you are really on your own.

It comes with a rock on a rope that is used as an anchor.

As far as it being easy for a single, it is if you have rowed a boat before.  You often see people who have never done it before and they are struggling.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: C&O Canal: There's fish but no water

Wow, so is that saying no water at all this entire season from Georgetown to outside the Beltway? It sounds like I'll have to find a new place for the mulberry hatch then this season... I guess the water that was in between 6 and 7 is an anomaly?

A PM inquiry via the Canal's FB page received just now:

"For now, water will enter the canal above Great Falls as normal at Violletts lock, and continue down to just above the "Log Wall" at Mile 11.2. Water will not be in the canal below the Log Wall and Lock 5 / Inlet Lock 1 for two reasons: repairs are required at the Log Wall and a culvert is being repaired this summer near Carderock. On a related note, maintenance Division is currently clearing debris from inlet Lock 1 to begin the process of re-watering from Lock 5 to Georgetown."

Might want to check with whomever is doing the clearing at Lock 1 for progress reports. There's a guide to mile markers here: http://www.candocanal.org/access.html

The continual water doesn't go east of the pedestrian overpass at Francis Scott Key park.  I haven't walked upstream from Georgetown yet.

Between Key Bridge and the Whitehurst Freeway overpass I counted a dozen LMB ranging 6-12 inches in size and 500+ bluegills yesterday mostly in the 2-4 inch range but with a few 6-7 inch fish.   Water depths looked to be 6-24 inches.   There is little to no cover or apparent food.  I'm guessing they like the warmth of shallow water and lack of current, possibly pre-spawn for the bluegills.  The 10-12 inch LMBs are probably following their food.  (See blurry bass pic)

Right now it seems a little unsporting to toss buggy dries at bluegills or strip streamers for bass in a glorified puddle.

Does anyone know when NPS will flood the canal?
