Since we are temporarily frozen out of fishing I thought I might ask a question of the list. I recently received some Cabela's bucks and decided to buy a 6 piece 10wt fly rod. I went after this rod for a particular situation. My wife and I go to Grand Cayman diving several times a year and when I am forced to accompany her to the shopping trip to the main town of Georgetown I can shop for maybe 5 minutes. Since the cruise ships dock at Georgetown there is a very long water front there. All the water front restaurants throw their fish scraps in at night as a ritual to feed the Tarpon. This causes the Tarpon to hang around all day and there is one particular area where local fisherman clean their catch with a dock and casting room. I tried with a spinning rod and nailed a fair 'cuda but I want one of the 'pons (20-50 lbs). SoI have the rod now I needed the reel and line. Since this is a limited use rod and I'm kinda cheap, I looked for a reel and line. I found an Okuma SLV 10-11 that looked about right in the picture on Amazon. Couldn't get any detailed specs but I ordered it anyway. Its a cast aluminum spool and frame and I'm sure some would poo-hoo that. I got the thing and its really BIG. I need to cast this thing so I'm putting the list on notice that if you see me on 4MR don't fall down in the water laughing (last time I was there I caught two on an 8wt with a big popper while John and Chuck had these flea flicking 3wts).
Question for Dan and Richie and anyone else - when a reel manufacturer goes from a cast reel to a machined reel do you think they necessarily upgrade the drag and bearing components? Since these components are inserted into the frame and spool they appear to me to look the same. What say the list?
