The lower Deschutes is a 90 mile tailwater below lake billy chinook north of bend.  No brown, all redsides.  I've caught very hot, early steelhead as early as mid august when I lived out there, though unusual versus the norm.  John Hazel a great guide.    Good nymphing all day long (whitefish also there), and some good caddis hatches if you catch them.

I had found a link for them yesterday. Is that the Upper Deschutes they're on? Didn't know steelhead could run that early and was only expecting to chase after browns, rainbows, and brook trout. You, sir, just made my day a little better!

If you go north, the Deschutes River Fly Shop in Maupin is great - very informative, full shop, and some great guides.  early steelhead could be in the Deschutes, and the redside (rainbow) fishing can be quite good.....Lots of bank access on the Deschutes if you don't want a guide.
