Meant to write this up earlier but given the drought of reports from our area I suppose it's timely enough.

Spent 4th of July week in Beech Mountain North Carolina visiting with family. The town of Beech Mountain is about 45 minutes east of Boone and is actually the highest town east of the Rocky Mountains.

After experiencing the crowds around here and watching the easily accessible rivers get absolutely pounded as soon as the poor rainbows hit the water during stocking season, it was refreshing to fish a place with plenty of stockers, and perhaps some wild mixed in, still milling around months after season thanks to the low fishing pressure up the mountain and the high altitude and low temps even in the middle of summer. Temps remained in the 70's most of the day with afternoons peeking into the low 80's.

Full days of fishing aren't quite in the cards at the point in my life, but I was able to squeeze in a few morning and afternoon trips on some of the stocked and hatchery supported lakes and streams on the mountain, as well as the Elk River at the bottom of the river which runs through the town of Banner Elk.

Caught most of the fish on the 7'6 3wt which is slightly easier to fish with while carrying a human than the 9'0 5wt. Fish came mostly on a Splitsville Beetle as well as nymphs.

This was my first trip to the mountain and while I barely scratched the surface of the glut of fly-fishing options in the surrounding area, I highly recommend Beech Mountain. Very quiet, great temps and plenty to do, including a scenic and challenging golf course.
