Cam, I picked up a kayak 3 yrs. ago and haven't regretted it. This area is a kyaya Mecca. Good luck. Be glad to go out with you someday.

Grizz is definitely the guy to talk to.  As an added bonus, Jerry Kustich of Sweetgrass Rods (formerly Winston Rods) will be here Saturday – you can ask them both.

I got a cheap antique bamboo rod a few years ago, I tried a few lines on it and a 7wt seemed to be the sweet spot. When shad season came along I brought it out to Fletcher's and on the very first cast, shad hits... and WHHACCCCK! Rod broke below the first ferrule.

Supposedly the bamboo had dried out and needed some professional treatment before handling a fish. I'd try to get someone with expertise in bamboo (Griz at Urban Angler maybe) to evaluate it before you fish your rod.

I would suggest Clarks Classic Fly Rod Forum as well I'm a member but the bamboo guys could probably give you better advice. I'm not familiar with the first two makers but I would go with the Farlows it's 8' long which is a good length for a bamboo rod. Secondly Farlows has been around since about the same time as Hardy, Sharpes, etc 100+ years so there is a long history of quality equipment, workmanship, etc they have made a lot of good bamboo rods. Good luck with what ever rod you choose.

I'd ping Dan Davala on Bull Run in your backyard.  Small water but it might be a good place to test out some sea legs and new setups.  Also, in a few months once the shad get going, below the Occoquan Reservoir Dam would be good place to start - assuming there is some water flow this year..  There are quite a few previous posts on that area.  The place can be crawling with shad and few stripers once the run gets going.  Heard of a snakehead or two in there as well.

I picked up a canoe last spring, and used it a bunch of times on the Shenandoah and Upper Potomac (downstream of Harpers) to target smallmouth, and it's an absolute blast.  Really anywhere on those two rivers with a small boat will give you an awesome day of fishing.  Also great for the Shad run at fletchers, as long as you don't get too close to the current from the falls.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fishing show in MD

The Fly Fishing Show used to come to College Park at U of Maryland. I attended there in 2000 through '02 or '03 and then it went away. I spoke with Chuck Furimsky or Barry Serviente or Gerri Serviente the year they didn't return to College Park and I was told that they folded that location because the exhibitors weren't happy with sales/attendance, etc. About 3 years ago they did the show in King of Prussia and then moved it to Lancaster in the subsequent 2 years, so I think the 2014 show will be their 3rd in Lancaster. I like the Lancaster location: it's closer than King of Prussia and downtown Lancaster is less of a navigational hassle, IMO, but then again I like many of those funky old PA towns. Besides, the Lancaster Central Market offers some good eats and Amish fruit/veg/butcher stands. (think small version of Philly's Reading Market)

Wow, thank you for all of the information and it looks like it would be a good investment. I will absolutly post asking for rigging suggestions once i get it. I wanted to also ask if anyone know particular spots out my way that could be close. I live in Bristow, VA (close to Manassas) that could be possibilities to float fish. Again thank you for all of the responses!

There a lot of good floats in the area.  Most of them are somewhat close by.

The Rappahannock River have several possible floats.  That is less than an hour south and it is in the area of Fredericksburg.

The Potomac River has a few floats.  You could also put in at Riverbend and paddle upstream.  I have done this several times and had some spectacular fishing.  I am sure that you could also put in at Fletcher's Boat house during Shad and the Striper run.

The Shenandoah River has several floats as well.  It is a very pretty place to fish and float.

RE: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Bamboo rods advice

It's often said that most rods get broken in and around cars, or when trying to get a fly out of a tree or log. It's possible to break a rod on a very large fish, and that's where experience and care come into it: I'm told it's all in how you play it. Hope I have this problem someday! To that end, I fish my bamboo at all opportunities; no, it's not very good for Czeck nymphing, but fly suspension devices make it possible.

I have a general question about bamboo fly rods.  I've inherited an unlabeled custom rod that is 6' and probably #5 or #6. Obviously it's meant to be a small stream trout rod, but is bamboo strong enough for other 6wt applications--carp, etc.?  It has a lot more backbone than my graphite 6wt, but I have no idea how strong it is when push comes to shove and I don't want to break it.

Graphite is a great material for 9' rods.  Bamboo gets a bit tip heavy

Remember to slow your casting down.  Most bamboo rods are going to be

personally i never use any of my bamboo except for tossing little dry flies, just because mine are still original parts and don't want to risk it. but if you fight the fish right, it should be fine.

Looks like the same one to me!  It has a scar on top of it's head that looks the same as when I caught it a couple months ago.  I actually spent about 15 minutes or so stalking what I believe to be this same fish on a different day in December, but he eluded me that day.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: San Diego and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii - anyone got the scoop?

Oh - and you're going to need a bigger rod... On Oahu the wind and the fish will smash your 4 wt - and I would think you'll just get by with the 6 wt.  I think an 8wt minimum.  If you are lucky enough to hook up with a Hawaiian Bonefish, it'll try to break you off on the coral heads - you'll need the 8 weight to fight/steer the fish.

In San Diego, you might be able to get away with the 6 wt (surf perch), but that 8 will sure come in handy (halibut for sure).

One more thing - if you are up to the 1.5 hour drive - you should fish the Los Angeles River, just to say you did it.

There is a flyshop at Liberty Station in San Diego.  They have guide services but if you aren't interested in that, there are a few internet groups like this one (but I can't remember their urls - just try googling).

Al Q is another resource for San Diego.  http://alquattrocchi.wordpress.com/  also google Gary Bulla (I think that is his name - good flies).

Halibut, Corbina and Surf Perch are the targets in San Diego.

For Oahu, the ginormous bonefish are out on the Windward side - guides with boats are your best bet, but again if you want to DIY, Maunalua Bay Beach Park at lowtide is worth trying.  Also Ala Moana Beach Park (you can see footage of one of the guides fishing this spot on youtube).  There is a flyshop tucked at the back of a small strip mall called Nervous Water (google them, get the address and look for them around the corner from the Chinese restaurant).  They'll have the right flies (think rootbeer gotchas or try googling "Spam and Eggs").

If you have access to the bases, there is even more opportunity, but you should do some research on this (Hickam Flats).

I'm jealous...

I wouldn't give that fish to anybody to eat...  that guy sits in that outfall day after day.

I don't think you could kill it either - kinda like a cockroach - you can try but it will laugh at you.

I think we should name that cat - if I'm not mistaken, that is the same one Paul Kalajainen caught back in November.  How about "Repeat Pete"?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Float Fishing?

This area is excellent for kayak fishing and Rob’s listed some good locations.  I would also add Pohick Bay and Mason Neck area for more below-the-fall-line locations.  If you want tips on how to rig the boat, this is also a good forum to do so.  There’s lots of experience among the members and you can usually find a paddling buddy here as well.

Treat it like a car-topper boat.  Plenty of lakes to go to.  Also a Shenandoah float would be much awesome.  If it's an ocean-going kayak (11.5-14 feet long), Virginia beach and the lower Potomac is a great place to go hunt for stripers and LMB.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: 4MR

Will,

When they aren't schooling they will often take the damsel, wait for the shad run to start at Chain Bridge and they will annihilate the damsel. I've also had them go for thingamabobbers in 4MR.

That catfish is nasty gross. What is the TPFR official stance on killing them? Md DNR wants them all killed. They do more harm than any other fish in the river system. I haven't caught one yet but, not sure if I'd bash its head in quickly or give it to someone.

Gizzards are never interested in anything I offer...what do they go for?

Treat it like a car-topper boat.  Plenty of lakes to go to.  Also a Shenandoah float would be much awesome.  If it's an ocean-going kayak (11.5-14 feet long), Virginia beach and the lower Potomac is a great place to go hunt for stripers and LMB.

I have an opportunity to pickup a kayak for a pretty good deal that i am going to outfit so i can fly fish from it but before i pick it up, i wanted to see if there is any where in our region that is good for float fly fishing. I thought i would put it out to the group to get some ideas of areas to float fish since i am sure the collective group will have better intel that what i can search on the internet. Not sure i should do it if i cant really use it so i wanted to put it out there to get some advice. Thank you in advance!
