{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Native, Wild, Holdover, or Stocked

Two pieces of information that have been posted recently, that I believe to be incorrect, have got me to thinking….

1.      John Gierach referring to himself as a native American in a book quote.

2.      Native brown trout populate the waters of Beaver Creek in MD.

John Gierach looks to be of European descent. In fact Gierach is a German name.   So, by my estimate, John Gierach is no more native American than the trout swimming in Beaver Creek are native Browns.

All Brown Trout come from Europe, and parts of Asia, some from Germany, like Gierach's family lineage. Since the correct designation of Brown Trout found in north America is either stocked, wild, or holdover (never native)…we must assume that John Gierach must be either a Stocked, wild, or holdover-American. From what I gather John Gierach was born somewhere in the Midwest area of North America in 1946. This tells us that clearly he is not a stocked-American. Since we also know that John Gierach has memories of his late father and was not placed in the Midwest in some sort of test tube, we can conclude that he is not a holdover-American either.

I think we must surmise that, as the trout in Beaver Creek are wild Browns…John Gierach is indeed a wild-American.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Spots for the Waderless?

I left my waders in NY.  Hopefully will have them next week.  Any spots aside from the Tidal Basin around DC where I can fish without waders?  I'm trying to get my fishing fix this week after work.

I was out for a couple hours today first at Gravelly Point, then at Four Mile Run. I was have never seen the water so clear at either location. I was amazed. I also found it to be really low, even though I was out shortly after high tide.

I saw schools (at least a hundred fish in one - and an 18" LMB following) of Gizzard Shad at 4MR, but the battery in the camera was dead, so I didn't get to film them. I did get a fun compilation of Bluegills, though:

Also, can anyone identify the little fish in this video? Sculpin? Some kind of Dace?

Attached is a photo of the only fish I caught all day. What a fun fight!

2nd - a few minutes later something strange popped up out of the water. Not a doodie. It moved toward shore. It turned out to be a good sized brown water snake with a good sized bluegill in its mouth. I got my iphone up to it to record some video before it spit it out. I then slipped and filled my waders. I got lucky with the phone. Time to get a lifeproof case. And about the worries of putting a tippet in mouth after its been in the water, I'm pretty sure I ingested some of the 4MR and have not had any issues so far.

The most interesting thing I saw were massive schools of fish swimming around. These fish numbered in the hundreds, if not thousands, all in the area of the discharge. I'm not sure what they were, but they appeared to be silvery and looked like shad. They were all about 6 inches, but every once in a while I'd see a loner that was 10 or 12 inches. They completely ignored any fly (although I wasn't really trying for them except for three casts with a nymph), and seemed like they were simply displacing any fish that would normally be there. Any thoughts on what these could have been? Lane actually foul hooked one and got a picture, so hopefully he can post it for confirmation. He said it was very slimy if that gives any clues...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Spotted Bluegill "poachers" ?

I worked for DDOE in the water quality division for 2 years before landing my current job and I asked the DC fisheries biologists (who work out of the Anacostia Rec Center (AREC) about who enforces fishing regulations.  They, to the man, had no idea who would actually enforce the regs.  I suspect NPS might enforce the regs in certain locations, particuarly near the Tidal Basin....but I would guess that few if any of them actually know what the DC regs actually are.

With most things in government, if it is not explicitly stated in the regs.....they can't really enforce anything.  So unless chumming is actually prohibited, there's virtually no chance that someone citing you for chumming in DC would hold up.  I've never chummed in DC, but I've never read that it is prohibited so I would assume it's acceptable.

For bluegill I assume the same applies.  Though I would not eat any fish captured anywhere in the area.

This makes me wonder about the general fly fisherman "catch and release" practice vs. the reality that population management can be a better overall approach to the health of the water.....

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Spotted Bluegill "poachers" ?

John Gierach wrote a similar story in "Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders" about a Vietnamese Community doing the exact same thing in one of his local ponds (keeping tons of bluegills) and he being asked to investigate because he was a stringer reporter for the outdoors column for a local newspaper.
"After a few phone calls and a little footwork, I came up with the following information:
"A. None of these people were willing to risk their pending citizenship by getting busted for anything, least of all poaching fish.
"B. They were keeping crappies, bluegills, and bullheads, and a legal combined limit for a family of five consisted of 400 fish, or "buckets" of them, if you prefer.
"C. A fisheries biologist said that removing small panfish in those numbers (they kept everything they caught, no matter how small) could only help the overall gamefish population.  That's why the limits were so generous in the first place.
"D. The Vietnamese turned out to be friendly, polite, and damned good fishermen, putting many of us native Americans to shame on all three accounts.
"And E.  When you look into a bowl of Vietnamese fish stew, it looks back at you."
Ref:

VA limit/day is 50 bluegills, no size limit.

Maryland says 15/day (under "sunfish") and no minimum length:

From what I can tell, DC doesn't even consider bluegill to be game fish.

Chumming is not addressed in the DC regs (actually, not much is in the regs).  Anybody have additional info/insight, or is DC just the lawless third world that we all know and love?

Yes, I'm a total LulzKiller.  =)

There were tons of gizzard shad out again, but much bigger than the ones I posted about in 4MR. These were nearly all 12-14" with some pushing 16 inches. They're really seeming to displace other fish - even the sunfish that always hang around in the little pools between the rocks.

Nerodia!  I worked with Western Cottonmouths in 2008 -- also had some pygmy rattlers, copperheads and many northern water snakes in the lab.  Funny thing about the northerns (and other nerodia from what I understand, Concho, etc.) is that grasping them at any point along their body most always elicits a strike and musk response......but if you immediately place the snake back into it's cage and present food, they will eat it right away!

The Cottonmouths....not so much.  So it's almost like the nerodia strike purely as a reflex action (likely selected for due to avian predation) but are not "stressed" by the experience.  Kind of interesting.

Sometimes I miss the lab, but you can only watch so many hours of neonatal cottonmouths moving through Y-mazes.  Bill Nye was much more exciting.

great things about night fishing but have always been afraid to try
it, especially with fly equipment. Great fish!

There were tons of gizzard shad out again, but much bigger than the ones I posted about in 4MR. These were nearly all 12-14" with some pushing 16 inches. They're really seeming to displace other fish - even the sunfish that always hang around in the little pools between the rocks.

Welcome to the group!  Refreshing to see someone write The Bronx.  Thought I was the only one down here.  Where’d you move from?  Guessing you fished often from City Island/Orchard if you’re a tin/plug fisherman in the Bx.

I live a couple of minutes from the Tidal Basin.  I usually don’t get there until 6 or later after leaving the fly shop here in Old Town, but shoot me an e-mail if you’re ever heading there..  maybe will meet up and BS a bit.

Subject: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} I'm new here

Hey everyone I recently moved down here to (Maryland, Wheaton area) and just really got into fly fishing.  I moved here from The Bronx, NY where I spin fished with plugs and tins for stripers and blues, so I am not new to Urban Angling.

Anyway I left my spinning rod back in NYC and made the transition to the fly.  Its such a better experience.  I am really stoked to be out here and want to thank Trent at Orvis in Bethesda for all the help.

I'm trying to meet some new people who are down to fish.  I fish after work (after 5) on weekdays at the tidal basin.  Looking to explore some more spots soon.  Possibly Pine Lake up here in Wheaton this weekend.

Welcome!  I'm new myself and really love this forum -- there are so great local fly fishermen in the area and they're extremely generous with their advice and help.

I fish the VA side, but the whole area has some great spots.  Just make sure you check out the fly rodders map!

I was able to find an opening on short notice with Dennis Alverson (Thanks for the info Mollie!), a 5th generation Montanan, who lives and guides(fly-fishing and elk-hunting) in the Livingston area. Before I made my way to Chico Hot Springs outside of Pray MT (situated between Gardner and Livingston and flanked by the Absaroka Range on the east and the Gallatin Range on the west). I stopped at Dan Bailey's Fly Shop in Livingston to pick up some flies and pick their brains for best access points for some DIY fishing. The guys were very helpful and with some hoppers and BWOs off I went.

I stopped at the LochLaven Fishing access, geared up and went down to the stream. Had the whole river to myself and within 15 mins pulled in one mountain whitefish after another. Saw several large trout rising but couldn't quite match whatever they wanted. Before I knew it the sun was fading fast and back to Chico I went to soak in their hot springs (highly recommend).

On a bright and beautiful saturday morning, Dennis picked me up from Chico Hot Springs and we stopped by Angler's West Fly Shop to pick up a few hot flies and then 10 minutes later, we were on the water.  Little did I know the night before would be a foreshadowing for the morning to come. We hit pocket after pocket of whitefish on the dryfly. Finally, we hit some 12 inch browns and some smaller rainbows before we made our way downstream. The biggest challenge that morning and then later in the day, was trying to find a fly that we could see in the glare that the fish would also take. Fortunately, Dennis had us covered and we would blind cast into the glare and use our reflexes if we saw a strike. One of the best moments of the morning was not seeing the fly, but see the water explode, yanking back on the line to see the fly come off the water and see another fish attack it mid-air (successfully!). Before I knew it the day was winding down, but the fishing didn't. Dennis knew the river like the back of his hand and we'd go through a section of water and Dennis knew the spots - if you could make the cast, you were basically guaranteed a strike (thankfully for me the casting practice paid off). The hot flies of the day was a size 16-18 Purple Haze dry behind a larger Size 10-12 Brown Deer Hair Caddis cast into the nervous water. In the end many fish were had (whitefish, bows, browns, and even a few cutts), a few big ones got away, but the pictures will speak for themselves. Also, for you politicos on here - Former SCOTUS Justice, Sandra Day O'Connor was on my flight - she loves to fly-fish! Cheers, Kevin

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Tidal Basin Night Fishing

Fished the tidal basin at night this week.  Ran into this channel catfish who forced me to palm my reel the other night.  Also ran into this smallmouth bass who took me by surprise and gave me a nice run.

So far I'm loving it out here

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Strip basket

I roll with a camelbak these days... Carries my hydration and my gear

As for a stripping basket... You can make a fully functional one two bungee chords and a plastic bin from Walmart... Super cheap and totally customized for your desires... Doubles as a good way to store our stuff in the car while in transit... Honestly though, no need for a stripping basket unless you're bombing with some serious amounts of line... In Hawaii I used one religiously, but that was because line control is essential in both long shots and getting a 7 lb bonefish on the reel successfully

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Accotink & Holmes run trout

Eric,
The TU Northern VA Chapter might post a call out for volunteers to help stock Accotink and Holmes, late October usually.  I was itching to trout fish all Summer and finally drove up to Hagerstown MD to try Beaver Creek. From Alexandria, it's 80 miles.  It's a limestone spring-fed creek.  Not as good as Mossy Creek, but I enjoy it.  Beaver Creek Fly Shop can help you out with cressbug and scud nymph patterns and point you to the hot spots.  The northern stretch of what they call the "lower section" fished well, but extremely difficult to access with bushwacking required.  The southern stretch of the "lower section" is much, much easier to access from the parking lot at Beaver Creek Road.  I ran into the DNR biologist for the stream and that's where he fishes.  All native browns I think, and a bit challenging.  Fish are mostly in the 8-15 inch range.  I'm still getting to know the stream, but I would recommend it.  James Harris and his dad at the fly shop where generous with advice - nice shop too.

I haven't fished Holmes Run since the county paved the trails.  Anyone know if is it still any good?  It seemed to have changed the creek bed terrain significantly.

On Friday, September 21, 2012 1:03:05 PM UTC-4, Eric Kruel wrote:
I am pretty excited about trout fishing this year, since it will be my first attempt for trout on the fly.  I understand that both Accotink creek (Wakefield park) and Holmes run will both be stocked with trout on Oct. 1st.  I have fished Accotink creek below lake Accotink in the past with a spinning outfit, but I believe they quit stocking that portion a few years ago.  It was pretty much elbow to elbow fishing with the person next to you, not really my favorite type of fishing.  Should I expect the same sort of thing in the Wakefield park section & Holmes run?  Also any advise on patterns would be great.  I plan on heading out to some streams in the Shenandoah region, any suggestions on some I might want to try that aren't more than 1-1/2 - 2 hours from the beltway?

I've had the LL Bean waist pack for over a year and love it.  I put it through some water tests and it's very dunkable.  Why Simm's changed their design in favor of a "splashproof" one is anyone's guess.  I wish Bean would come out with some belt accessories though, like a wading staff holster.   I have the William Joseph belt/stripping basket and that's a winner too.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Strip basket

I'll second the note on fanny and sling packs tendency to hit the water.  On that note however, I have a sling, I absolutely love it, and I can't imagine any other pack working any better.  When wading deep I just have to remind myself to cinch it a little tighter, or else slide it higher on my shoulder.  In fact, I've been wading up to my upper chest at Riverbend (not recommended btw) with the sling pack rotated out of the water on my shoulder.  It's also very unobtrusive to a left handed caster - tho I can't vouch for a righty.

On stripping baskets in the salt, I constructed one out of ~$8 in materials from Target and it functioned admirably. Unfortunately it was not very packable and it was left in Mexico when it was displaced in my luggage by souvenirs.  I have since picked up a Mangrove Hipshooter that breaks down into a slightly slimmer package that is pretty great in the limited use it has seen so far (jetty, beach, and boat).  Like Charlie, the key for me is getting low enough below my waist to be functional and not get in the way of the actual stripping motion.

I have never seen them stocked on Oct 1.  Seems like around the 3rd week of the month is more common.  Lower water temps and generally better levels.

Is Holmes for sure being stocked October 1? I thought they weren't stocking until later in the month.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Strip basket

Just two cents real quick on fanny packs/sling packs/stripping baskets if you've not had any experience with them as yet.

1. I'm short. I'm 5'7" (Maybe 5'7.5" in my wading boots) and both the Orvis sling packs and more obviously all iterations of the Simms fanny packs I have tried got absolutely soaked when I absentmindedly got in a little too deep. Chest packs and shorty vests are my only real options. If you're a tall guy, then you have more options, but the whole distance of fly boxes to water equation wasn't immediately apparent to me when I got both of those bags. (Aside: if anyone wants an Orvis sling pack or a Simms fanny pack, let me know. I'll trade for flies or whatever ephemera you've got. Tying materials etc)

2. I'm not sure about the stripping basket thing if you're going on long hikes. Most backcountry fishing I do is small stream kinds of stuff, so I feel like I wouldn't need the line management aid that a stripping basket would otherwise provide. If you're looking to lighten your load on a hike, go minimal and you'll really be smiling. A lanyard with all the necessary baubles and a few leaders and you're golden.

3. Ignore all of this if you're talking about salt of which I know little.

I ditched the vest years ago for a waistpack then I dumped the waistpack for a slingpack.  The slingpack rocks.

For a stripping basket I prefer models that are low on the waist and stick out far enough to accomodate my style of retrieve.   The one in the video looks like it may be too high on the waist and does not stick out enough for my liking.

you should load one with gear, put it on, and strip line into it to see if it works for you.

I have been looking to buy strip basket but I don't really want to bring too much stuff – rod, reels, fly boxes, basket, net, and more when you are going to hike a long trail.

This video caught my eyes and I think it is great design/idea! But I only found one comment on this product with 5 stars. Anyone has it? Or your opinion after you review it? I just want to get feedback before I purchase it.
