Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Good Wade-able places in NOVA?

I suggest you read your Thoreau more closely.  You can't define fishing for me anymore then I can for you.

I'm going to reply here and although I could write a diatribe, I will keep it short.

Hotspotting and divulging information about a "secret" creek or phenomenal fishing opportunity is not mandatory as participation in this group.

I think Dan mentioned in the past that there are 750+ members in this Google group.  That many people will receive e-mail notification of every post (unless they unsubscribe), and because it's a Google group, the entire world can just do a simple internet search and find out a decent place to go fishing in the nearby area - great news for those who just want a place to wet a line, bad news for people who wanted solitude and showed up at Gravelly Point on a Saturday during an afternoon high tide.

I've said this before and I'll reiterate a quote by Henry David Thoreau – "Many men fish all their lives without ever realizing that it is not fish they are after."

If easy answers and instant gratification without doing any of the homework is what you're seeking, maybe fly fishing isn't for you.

Miles,

Good objective response.  When I read DH's comments it made me feel there were now "intruders" on the board and that only original members were worthy of knowing "secret" spots.  I don't post much but I've been around since near the beginning and I think everyone has been very helpful and cooperative with information.  It's been a great benefit to me when I'm in the area.  And I'm relieved that most responses were directed at being open with information, as the posts have nearly always been.

I will continue to share anything I think might be helpful and useful to make someone else's day on the water all the better.  That's always been what I feel the spirit of this board is all about.

Dubble Haul,

I'm going to 'not cool' this post -- not in anger, not to flame or troll, just to say that I don't think it's in the spirit of the board. On the one hand, as far as I know, everybody here is committed to preserving every spot we fish, to the extent possible. Conservation is a big part of the flyfishing ethos, and a goal we're committed to as an FFF charter club.

On the other hand, the spot you're talking about has probably already been mentioned here before. The best thing about this board is that most folks are so generous with their knowledge -- if I had a year of Mondays (my day off), I probably couldn't fish all the 'secret spots' people have posted here. And if I happen to fish your spot -- which I don't know where it is -- and it ends up being awesome, I would definitely tell the board about it.

best,
Miles
