Bears den is rather impressive. Indoor casting room, more used rods on sale than most fly shops have new rods. Loads of fly tying materials. It's worth the visit.

Brief trip report: after flying in from DCA, renting a car, and hitting up the only fly shop I could find in greater Beantown (Orvis in Dedham) for some last minute supplies (flies, a dry wick hoodie, and some 25lb monofilament), I hit a few spots near Hingham and Weymouth, MA: Webb Memorial State Park, Stodders Neck, and Bare Cove Park.

I dry waded at all three spots and threw a variety of clousers, deceivers, and crabs. Action was slow generally, but picked up near sunset at Bare Cove, on white and chartreuse minnows. I caught 4 schoolie stripers in a half hour stretch (none over 16") — casting about 40' straight out and stripping back hard when the fly dropped 2-3 feet.

Bare Cove is a 400+ acre nature preserve closed to vehicular traffic (you have to hike/walk about 3/4 mile to get to open water). It was a perfect day/evening weather-wise: high 70s, dry, sunny, not too breezy.

I had a friggin' blast and I'm still on a bit of a "high" if that makes sense to anyone. I've been day dreamin' about getting back out in the salt flats ASAP.

Thanks to everyone for their recommendations! I am so hooked on this now. No pun intended.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Upper Potomac

Has anyone been targeting smallmouth on the Upper Potomac this summer? I have been out three times for a couple of hours in the evenings and its been unusually slow. It seems to be better in the morning, but having trouble finding fish high or low... The river as a whole is quiet.

Haven't fished it myself either, but I used to catch lines on some boats that tie up there around 500/530AM and there were fish rising all over the place right on the waterfront. Always wanted to go check it out but haven't yet.

Never seen an osprey go upstream like that on a hunt where there are so many trees. Made my day. It was north of P street, by the beautiful old graveyard.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Miracle Mile - North Platt river in WY

I've fished it in November, so I don't know what bugs will be around in August. In November, we fished midges under bobbers and streamers. From what I recall, the section nearest the dam is super deep and wasn't wadable, but mile or so down it became much more shallow with some riffles, long runs, big bends. It's a big river but pretty popular and the road is right next to the river with many access points. I'd want to have a care if I were you, but it's doable walking down the river too.

Good luck!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Idaho??

We have friends on Lake Pend Oreille. I was dropped off at some random tributary of the lake while the others hiked. I found cutthroat in the lower stretches (none had any remarkable size). I fished upstream and with no particular change in scenery or topography the cutthroat were gone and were replaced by gigantic bull trout. I've never come across a more aggressive salmonid which is probably why no cuts were up there. One of the best days I've ever had fishing. Foam terrestrials for cuts, big streamers for the bulls.

Hopefully you find something similar.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Miracle Mile - North Platt river in WY

I will be leaving in about 10 days to join with my 2 brothers to fly into the dirt airstrip that is about a mile and a half below the upper Kortes dam.  This will be similar to backpacking via small plane.   There is what appears to be a popular forest service camp spot less than half mile from the end of the air strip.  If anyone has camped there (or close by) and fished this stretch (in August) I would appreciate any info you would share.  We have a weight restriction due to the small plane and it also leaves us hanging food via a bear bag (no vehicle to secure things in).  Would love first hand experience with water levels from power generation.  Does it fish when generation is going on? I'm an eastern guy with very little experience fishing bigger western waters.  Any thoughts about that would be helpful.  Thanks in advance.

The website Dalton posted is pretty good. I also found it after reading that article. I couldn't help but check some of the beaches I used to swim back in Cleveland. The ones close to the city also went from red to orange to green after rain like the rivers here. I've always followed the "don't go in after it rains" rule. I personally wouldn't sweat falling in for a moment. Earlier in the year I stepped into a big hole at 4MR and flooded my waders and had to swim back to shallow water. My head didn't go under water but I got dang close. Pretty nasty. but I didn't have any adverse effects. Don't get me wrong, I'm not making that a regular thing.

I see people wading and letting their dogs swim in Rock Creek all the time. That I wouldn't do, although I will admit I've traipsed through ankle-high water in my wading boots to get better angles.

Now, if someone gets a brain-eating amoeba around here, I'm probably going to rethink things.

I've heard of it happening maybe once a year-there are stocked streams in MD I can think of where they could theoretically wash down from. Esp. parts of Seneca Creek. I'm told Difficult Run still had brook trout in the 80s before the headwaters became super-developed.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Harpers Ferry...Trout...

This past Saturday I spent a couple of hours fishing up in Harpers ferry off of Milville rd right after the dam.  I caught a couple of smallies and a carp and was a great day out.  While standing in the shallows, I noticed a fish was hanging out directly in between my leg, and initially, I thought it was a bass.  After using my net to scoop it up I realized that the fish was in fact a rainbow trout.  The fish was incredibly lethargic and had been attacked by something (maybe a bird).  Has anybody either caught or seen trout in the Harpers Ferry area before?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Potomac water quality?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac water quality?

Does anyone know of a resource that reports the daily water quality of the Potomac? I am trying to figure out how bad it is if I were to accidentally fall off my paddle board for a brief moment. Right now I am using the very scientific formula: if it hasn't rained for a week, it is probably fine...but I would like a little more data.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Let there be WATER!

Wish I had words of wisdom for you brother. I've never wet a line right there but I drive down rock creek parkway all the time. I've even seen an osprey following the road north as it looked left, and it suddenly dove down and bagged what I'm assuming was a large mouth running away. Never seen an osprey go upstream like that on a hunt where there are so many trees. Made my day. It was north of P street, by the beautiful old graveyard.

South fork Boise, now that peak irrigation flows are dropping. Managed for trophy trout, especially Rainbows and Bull trout. It is only an hour from Boise airport also. Henry's Fork (of Snake River) at Island Park is world famous. Payette river between Cascade Lake and Horseshoe Bend.

If you are in the Boise area, there is the Boise River. It runs through the city. If you have transportation I'd suggest going upstream of the city.

There's a couple of nice rivers in the southeast where the state borders Yellowstone and Tetons.
