Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Naples FL fly fishing

Awesome update, John. That wasn't that far from me—and I saw those kayaks on YouTube but wasn't able to find them for rent. I was thinking about buying an inflatable kayak or SUP for up north and then taking it down with me. Then I'd have way more chances to fish. The biggest mistake I made was wandering around too much. I realized too late I went the wrong way and then spent the majority of my time paddling to get back to the launch site. But there were a bunch of boat docks that were relatively undisturbed I should have camped out on for longer time.

The guy I rented a kayak from told me about how in the summer he caught a 3 foot tarpon in skinny water with a spin rod near where you bring back the kayaks. It was maybe two foot of water when I was there. I think normally it's deeper. The fish went wild, jumping three times before he had to cut the line because he couldn't handle it. Can't wait to go back and give it another whack!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Naples FL fly fishing

Thanks for this Jamie. I don't know how often they are for rent, but there are specialty kayaks which you paddle with your feet. I'm assuming that near surf and/or with all the other noises that you could still fly-fish with them if you paddle slowly and quietly.

I pulled a bunch of sea trout out of the circled area a few years ago with some sink tip line and lord knows what flies/lures. I wasn't in a kayak but in a little jon boat with a low hp evinrude. I can single haul well and double haul pathetically (though I can Spey like a beast!), but to tell the truth I wasn't having to cast terribly far with the sink tip. The guy at the shop (which I of course can't remember now it being years back and a lucky unplanned half day on an exhausting work trip) told me the spot. Can't remember the store but I remember that exact spot. The rest of the day I was pulling lots of saltwater catfish out of there, with float or sink along the mangroves. Those little catfish fought pretty hard, and one of them, a feisty runt bound to have lots of kids, poked a big hole in my Merrill hiking boots! I also accidentally caught a beautiful young hammerhead, too, which amazingly didn't break my rod.

OK pix below.

It's my understanding the extreme harvesting of baitfish, such as menhayden , is impacting striper migration. They will follow the food.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Striped Bass: Has the stock crashed

I saw the talk of them wanting to open up the EEZ to striper. That's the one area where there are an absolute ton of (protected) fish. Seems insane to me that they'd want to let those get harvested given how well we were able to deplete the lower bay.

I have always hoped they would manage them like they do red drum. For those unaware, Red Drum have a slot and anything overslot has to be released which keeps the adult spawning population intact.

Fishing for red drum the past few years has been absurdly good with 10+ fish over 40 pounds in a night being considered a normal night during peak run. Could you imagine if the Striped Bass got protection like that?

This is an interesting read focusing on the feeder streams to Rock Creek. I always love learning new things about this stream—throughout my time in DC, it's always basically been in my backyard. I've spent a lot of time there and have caught sunfish, bass and perch. I've seen river herring, carp, catfish and snakehead up as far as Cleveland Park. It's unfortunate how dirty it is, and I always grimace when I see people dip their feet or let their dogs jump around in there. I wouldn't want my dog jumping around on furniture after that!

I would love to see cities invest in cleaning up streams like this.

I encourage everyone to also read this article written on Fissues.

Furthermore, S. 1520 The Modernizing Recreational Fisheries Management Act of 2018 passed the House last night and is now heading to Trump to be signed into law.

However, this does not address the issue of NOAA issuing an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to open the EEZ to striped bass fishing.

Happy we are talking about this!

Reilly looks great, too. Thanks for these recommendations, Misha and Charlie!

I fished with Matt Miles this past summer on both the James and Staunton/Roanoke. Great guide working out of Amherst, VA. I just wanted to look to someone who considers the New to be home water.

Thanks again,
Owen

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Cacapon on the fly

I have a cabin too . It's about 5 miles from Great Cacapon. I'm happy to find others with Cacapon interest and experience. I fish for smallies too but never had anything like 100 fish day or over 14 inches. I wonder if there are more fish upstream than where I am. I've had luck with wooly buggers, crayfish patterns and minnow imitation streamers. Not so much on top water.

There are a couple low water bridges near me for access.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Cacapon on the fly

My cabin is in the Crossings community in Bloommery and no its not for rent, not allowed there.   Check wvdnr website for float trips,  there are a bunch.  I have floated about 35 miles of it from cacpon bridge on rt 50 to Largent rt 9.

You can float and wade most of it.  Great smallmouth from May to November.  Gotta watch the river gauges cause it can shoot up quick.  anything above 600cfs is tough to wade anything above 1000 cfs would be real tough to float and fish.  Good access at the bridges,  but all 60+ miles are private shoreline.  I have camped on several properties just by looking up land owners and asking permission.

Best public access is probably the rt 127 bridge or the Bloomery access in near the crossings if you want canoe/kayak access without a full commitment of a float trip,  you can wade and paddle upstream.  Most float trips are full day length and you don't want to get it a boat under 250 cfs if you have some place to be (lots of dragging).  It is one of the cleanest rivers in the state.  This is a good resource for the science of it https://www.cacaponinstitute.org/PDF/Publications/Portrait%20of%20a%20River.pdf   It is your normal low gradient smallmouth river.  Pool,  riffle,  pool riffle.  Nothing over a class 2 unless you hit it at flood stage.

River is full of crayfish and helgramites.  You can get 100 fish days,  but probably average 14" bass.  Got quite a few over the years over 18"  and the occasional 20"  fish.  Pockets of largemouth can be found,  lots of bluegill and rock bass,  fall fish,  carp.  No cat fish,  don't know why but there just aren't.  I here Muskie like the Mouth of the cacapon where it hits the Potomac.

Due to all the rain this is the first year as far as i can remember that i didn't do aa floattrip.

I will second Matt Reilly. He's a stand up guy and absolutely kills it on the New River. It's also worth looking into his trout trips he offers in the fall. He catches some really nice wild fish (https://www.mattreillyflyfishing.com/location-x).

Matt Reilly fishes the New and he's been hammering musky lately according to Facebook. Never fished with him so can't speak from personal experience, but I have a very good impression of him based on his website, blog, and facebook posts. He's a young gun. I think Matt Miles fishes the New as well, but someone else should confirm. I'm jealous you're gonna fish the New, it's on my bucket list!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Florida Salt Water suggestions....

I was down there around thanks giving this year. Back then there were still spurs of red tide in the opening of the bay but now that it's pretty much gone you'll have a lot more healthy water to fish. I highly recommend going up to Weedon Island Preserve and renting a kayak for a day, it's a super cool spot and has a healthy population of fish. Picnic island is kind of pressured but it's always a good backup if nowhere else is working. I would definitely contact one of the fly shops when you get there to get more info from someone who lives there and goes out more often.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Naples FL fly fishing

Hi all--rekindling this thread!

I'm going to be in Naples next week. I don't think I'll have time to do a charter/guided trip this time around--and to be honest, I need to practice my accuracy and double-haul before I invest in that--but I'd like to try and get out spend a few hours on the water. Does anyone know of anything that is doable from the beach or generally doable without a boat?

I've found a few good resources online so far and am planning to hit up a local shop to buy some supplies, but any additional thoughts are appreciated!

Hey guys, thanks for the response's. Now that I think of it, I did use
Mangrove Outfitters the last time I was down there. My colleague who is
attending the meeting with me is very much a novice to the sport. I told him
much the same thing you guys are telling me and that is if he can't at least
single haul this might be a very expensive lesson for him. I know it was for
me the first time I went out. I'll talk with the shop and see if we can try
to target fish that might be out of the heaviest wind. Maybe going into the
mangroves is the best bet...

I was just at St Pete in Oct and had good luck finding Snook walking along Pass-a-Grille beach.  The Snook were right in the surf zone.  There is plenty of public parking right along the beach on Gulf Way.  Also had great fun fishing the dock lights at night with Capt Dave Dant (727-744-9039).  A good fly shop for local info is Tampa Bay On the Fly.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Florida Salt Water suggestions....

Wade fishing around islamorada isn't very good but there are some spots. A few you might want to try: flats behind long key state park, beach at the end of seven mile bridge, Bahia Honda state park are a few off a f the top of my head. There is a flat at mm 76 that people fish but I've never caught anything there. Anne's beach is another spot.

I'm headed to Florida in February for a couple of weeks.  I'll have time near Islamorda and Gulfport (St Pete) for fishing on my own.  Have a guide to do Everglades snook and tarpon.

Any suggestions for fishable beaches appreciated.

Congrats Andrew! I'm interested in the program .... any info you're willing to pass along that worked for you would be much appreciated. I'm on the hunt for a mentor in Loudoun County (Leesburg area).

Thanks in advance.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} December Beer Tie and Holiday Party with Huge Raffle and Ugly Sweater Contest

Another reminder, Beer Tie is coming up tomorrow. We have a lot of sweet prizes to give out between the raffle and various contests. Dont forget to wear your ugly sweaters, and if you're interested in the raffle bring cash; sorry, we're having technical difficulties on the card reader.

The main prize in the raffle is a brand new 9' 6wt Orvis Recon rod; other sweet prizes include multiple rods, flies and ornaments. Ornaments and stationary were donated by Kevin from Kenmore Fly Shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/KenmoreFlyShop

I won't be able to attend tomorrow, but Rob, Art, and Trent will be holding down the fort.

Thanks,
Dalton

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Telescoping fly rod?

I don't really like rods with more than 5 pieces.  There are too many ferrules to loosen up and more parts to loose.
If i really needed a packable small stream rod, I would shop the Japanese sites. https://www.bluedun.net
Use google translate.  Shipping ends up being ~$35 but it gets here faster than from many US based stores.

But these are usually under 8' and 4wt or less.

Hope this doesn't break any group rules, but this is a good deal for a travel rod with 23" sections. I've got the same rod in 7-piece and it travels everywhere with me: https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/spo/d/redington-wayfarer-fly/6760648111.html

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by travel rod, but any ~9ft 4 piece rod (kinda the industry standard these days) will do fine in the overhead of a plane, as a commuter rod to keep in a backpack you may want a lighter 6 piece, or a sub 8ft 4 piece rod, or even look into a tenkara or keiryu rod.

I will say this, I had a 6 piece travel 8 weight for a long time from a reputable builder, I bought spare tip section like they were going out of style and I broke that rod so often I eventually threw it in the trash. I don't think most 6 piece + rods are all that durable, and they are a pain to setup and keep the line guides aligned.

Hey all,

I'm curious if you've found a good telescoping fly rod or if there's a blank (i.e., Tenkara) you would recommend to convert into a fly rod? One of the reasons I don't fish more often is that I don't have a car and it's a pain in the butt to carry a rod tube everywhere. Interested in something more commuter backpack friendly but would also allow me to practice my casts.

If there's not a good option, I'd like to take a crack at making one out of something else.
