Andrew, kiddo's shad is definitely an American. Your shad is a hickory aka blueback herring. The hickories have a more blueish tint to their scales, and you can see more spots on their sides. The Americans we get in the Potomac are yellowish and have fewer spots, in addition to being monstrously big.
