{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Getting started on the Potomac

There are a lot of rods and reels on the market as well as lines.  I fish frequently in the Lowcountry of SC so maybe someone can chime in and give their experience with that particular area.  Of all the rods and reels I own, I most prefer my TFOs.  While TFO makes some upper end rods their Lefty Kreh Pro series are hard to beat.  I was at a big casting clinic last year and had the pleasure of talking rods with several of the casting pros.  To the man, each said that they could not tell the difference between that rod and rods costing 4 times as much by several other manufacturers.  In addition, their no fault warranty is hard to beat and makes buying second hand rods a no risk proposition.  As for reels, you can spend a fortune or $40.00 and the end result  is nearly the same and only matters in proportion to the size of fish you're fishing.  A drag system doesn't matter if you're catching panfish size fish but becomes important with a 15# Albie.  I fish, almost exclusively, Okuma Airframe reels.  They don't seem to be available here in stores but you an still find them on Ebay for $30 to $40.  I have several of this reel that I've fish for over 10 years in the Salt and have had no problems with them at all.  As for lines, I fish everything from Ebay, no name lines for $15 from China to $90 top of the line Orvis.  You may need to fish a floating line and at times a sinking line.  To solve that dual need, I carry and use several  loop to loop sinking tip.  It works well when you have to get down 5, 10, 15 feet.  My favorites have been some of all and always bought on sale.  I expect you will need something like a 6 weight set up. 

Hopefully someone that fishes that stretch of the Potomac will chime in with their experiences and suggestion.

I will also suggest that you own and wear an inflatable PFD while boating or wading the piece of water.  It can be a tough customer if you're in it. 

 I fished the flood tide yesterday with two guys good friends.  They fished $1,000 rod, reel, and line set ups, I fish my $175 TFO/Okuma/$15 line setup.  In short, we all caught fish.

I'm slowly getting back into fishing, and I want to pick up a fly fishing set I can use in the area.  All the knowledge I used to have of rods and lines weights is gone, and the options are endless, so I'm hoping the group can guide me to a good, price-conscious starter set.  I've mostly been casting on the Potomac above Great Falls, and dropping lines into rock creek park after work/weekends when I can't get out of the city.  What do you think?
