Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Building Furled Leaders Without Tools.

I'm not sure about a larger profile, the butt end of an extruded or built leader is fairly large, probably close to 15lb mono in size. Even if a furled leader is slightly larger the real advantage I've found is the supple nature of the leader. This leads to a number of advantages IMHO

1. A more delicate presentation if fishing dry's
2. Less link kink or memory
3. Because of item number 2 I believe it imparts better energy transfer through the cast
4. I end up spending less money on extruded leaders, in theory one well built furled leader could last a good portion of the season with far fewer knots being tied. i.e. you never have to rebuild leaders, just add more tippit.

This was actually the video I used to build my first furled leader. Word of caution, your hands will get sweaty and make it hard to spin the line(I used 6lb floro).

Maybe it's because I used a lighter line (he used 15lb mono in the video cause it shows up better) but when I furled it I didn't notice any significant size differences between my extruded leaders. The only difference is a clearer delineation between where I fold over the butt section to the rest of the leader. In an extruded leader this is a more gentle transition. Due to the supple nature of the leader though, this lack of a continuous transition doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm a convert, can you tell :)

Thinking of building a scrapwood jig this weekend to try it out.  Buts isn't a furled leader going to have a much more significant profile on the water, and doesn't that kind of eliminate the purpose of having a long leader?

I started using furled leaders last season and love them. I've only ever furled my own from a single piece of 6lb flouro. I've never had it unravel, although I know that I can do a better job furling my next one. My only complaint is when I have to change tippit. I have to carefully snip off the knot at the loop of the furled leader, always a nervewracking proposition cause if I snip the leader the whole thing is garbage. I just ordered some tippet rings which I'm excited to try on my new homemade furled leaders to try and avoid this problem.

Build one and you will see.  It is not what I was expecting.  If I were fishing for a lot of larger fish with sharp teeth and I had to change leaders often, I might like it.  For my freshwater fishing around here, I will stick with Nylon leaders or standard furled leaders.

I ran across this video on youtube the other day. I have never seen this before, but I gave it a shot and it works great. Has anyone every had these guys unravel during fishing? Seems like an easy and cheap way to build some leaders during the "thunder snow". I was pretty surprised how well it worked.
