Longer rods are always easier to cast. My kid started off with a TFO Bug Launcher and now uses a 9' 5wt. Get your kid a nice one so you can use it as a backup when he isn't with your. Or if he doesn't get into fishing you have a nice second rod. Its like Homer Simpson getting Marge a bowling ball with the name 'Homer' on it.
You won't need a fancy reel so spend the money on polarized lenses, nice rod, etc.

In a couple of other forums I've read the recommendation was similar to what Kevin said.

First off, I am not an expert and never trained my son's in fly fishing. On the Orvis Podcast, Tom Rosenbauer gets some version of the question frequently. He always recommends a 9 ft rod. Bottom line is that they are easier to cast than a shorter rod. Tom also has a video on the subject of getting kids to fly fish.--On Fri, Jul 10, 2020, 1:23 AM Justin <anglingdc@gmail.com> wrote:Hi all - looking for advice on a first fly rod for my 9 yr old son. Mostly trout fishing, perhaps small bass and panfish in local ponds. Is it better to get a traditional 9' 5 wt or something a bit shorter to help with rod management. He's not the most coordinated kid ever, so was airing on side of a bit shorter, esp since most of the rivers we fish are on smaller side.
Thanks!
