I was down at Long Bridge Park yesterday, next to Roaches Run - aka the Duck Pond - and I noticed whatever is going on here. Does anybody know? It's hard to see in the photo, but the stakes all have strings connecting them with shiny reflectors, probably to repel birds. The whole area is surrounded by netting in the water. There were two...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Susquehanna Float....What happened to the upper potomac...

Jason,Your not alone in noticing the deterioration of the Potomac as a smallmouth fishery. I've fished it for about a decade and typically do a half dozen trips to tribs like the mainstem, North and South Forks of the Shenandoah a year as well. It WAS different a decade ago. There are simply less smallmouth in the system for a number of reasons but namely climate change.Recently, MD stocked 30K smallies to aide in spawn recruitment,...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Susquehanna Float....What happened to the upper potomac...

I've spent a bunch of time fishing different sections of Seneca Creek and the Monocacy.  Have done very well there in years past (my PB smallie is from the Monocacy) but it has been very slow this year.  Fished the South Fork of the Shennandoah in early June but water was way way up.  Hoping to try out the north fork some time soon.On Monday, July 27, 2020 at 9:56:53 PM UTC-4, Jamie Carracher wrote:From what I've...

From what I've read, your analysis of the upper Potomac is pretty common right now. Between floods and poor water quality, the smallie numbers are down seems to be the consensus. I personally find wading the Potomac frustrating because it is hard to find places that are safe and it's hard to cover water on foot. I feel like I spend more time trying to make sure I don't put myself in danger I hardly do any actually fishing. Have...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Susquehanna Float....What happened to the upper potomac...

This summer has been by far the hardest I have ever worked for smallies on the Potomac.  When I was first beginning to fly fish, I would wade the river around lock 7 and always pick up a couple of decent smallmouth even though I could barely cast.  Now, after about 7 years of fly experience under my belt, I have been lucky to catch 1 fish in a couple of hours of fishing in the same spot...  It just seems as if the...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Potomac reports?

Camped at the Harper's Ferry adventure park this weekend and put some time in fishing while others in our group were tubing/ziplining/sleeping. Had several bites, but didn't catch anything. Probably because the fish were too small for what I was using. The variety and number of terrestrials I observed was astonishing compared with what I normally see closer to DC. If nothing else, it was fun using a bunch of larger patterns I...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Potomac reports?

Fished the Potomac above Harpers Ferry this morning, got out early to beat the tubing floatillas. 5 smallies brought to hand all within the 8-10" range. All fish looked healthy, I've only recently started fishing this area and I'm much more familiar with the Shenandoah system. Are sunfish and fall fish present on the Potomac in the Harpers Ferry area? I've had a few encounters with catfish, they'll attack a black bugger or a clouser....

Thanks, all, for the advice. I never did land a trout in that spot (although I got a big ol bluegill that I didn't even know was in there). I explored a bunch of the dam made lakes in the area, some of which had decent smallmouth. So if anyone is ever in the area west of New Market and want some suggestions, let me know. (Although what you should really do is talk to the guys at Mossy Creek Fly Fishing in Waynesboro, which...

I got skunked on the smallies today at Riverbend (and even started fishing before 7:30). Saw three other fly casters over the course of about five hours, and only one had caught a small smallmouth (casting a clawdad with spey). Maybe they're wearing masks? Had to switch to poppers and hit the shaded wood on the banks to save the day with a half dozen 'gills. The water temp was like taking a bath. Best, OwenOn...
