Tidal Potomac Flyrodders - "Fish where you are, not where you ain't"

Hello friends!

This spring has brought great change to all of our lives. As a non-profit group with an education, conservation and community focus, we have been asking ourselves, "how can we change TPFR to make the club better for you?" You may have already noticed the new website and the virtual beer ties.

While we have more improvements planned, we want to hear from you. What do you like, what should we change or add? Please let us know by filling out our TPFR survey.

One final request is to send us your pictures from your recent trips at contact@tpfr.org. We would love to highlight them on the TPFR social media.

We would like to welcome you to our new TPFR newsletter! Our goal is too not only highlight great fly fishing opportunities in the Potomac watershed, but also give you the skills and key knowledge to succesfully enjoy these areas firsthand.

This current edition will be shad focused – Where to find them, how to cast to them and how to tie proven shad treats.

Be safe and see you on the water!

Where to find shad

When water temperatures are in the low to mid 60˚Fs, it is that most wonderful time of the year – shad time! Quit putting off enjoying one of the great spring rituals of the Chesapeake Bay's tidal rivers. For those who want to get in on the fun, we are including a great Potomac river shad 101 video for fishing the spring shad run and how to put your flies in front of those hungry American and Hickory shad. While this video is Potomac River focused, the techniques also work for shad in other mid-Atlantic rivers like the Susquehanna and Rappahannock. In addition, sign up for the National Capital Chapter of Trout Unlimited's Shad Report for frequent updates on the Potomac River shad run.

What gear works for shad?

The beauty of shad fishing is that you really don't need to buy specialized gear. You can use your trout or bass gear along with a sinking line or sink tip and you are nearly ready to battle these silvery acrobats.

Tying Bench

Currently Beer Ties at Whitlow's are on hold, so we can't meet, share a beer and  tie some of Rob's most tasty shad patterns. Not so fast! Next best to being there, here are some of Rob's videos to help you tie your very own proven shad catchers.

New Feature: Tying Tuesday's, TPFR's virtual Beer Ties. Each week we will highlight a new proven, fish catching pattern. This is a great way to improve your tying skills, keep in touch with your TPFR friends and decompress after a long day of searching for toilet paper.

Casting Corner

Since we can't currently meet and review casts that help you catch shad, here are some good videos to help you better place those shad flies in front of those hungry American and Hickory shad.

Conservation Corner

Please check out TPFR's new conservation page. We are asking members to voice their support for two matters: Striped Bass and Brook Trout.

It takes a village..

If you are able, consider purchasing your gear from these local business which have supported you with top quality gear and helpful advice to make your fishing trips a success. At TPFR, if you are able, we recommend getting new gear for your significant other or family members and take them fishing. Not only is great family activity, but it will make it easier for you to justify your new fly rod.
