Floated the South Fork on Sat with Joel Johnson. Water temps in the mid-70s, air temps in the morning in the high 40s / low 50s (!!) Travis Edens (Kingfisher Guide Services - http://www.kfguideservices.com/) did the guiding and rowing. We caught two ~17” smallies, a few 10-14” smallies and about 20-25 panfish (mostly bluegill). The bite was noticeably slow in the morning and early afternoon, but really picked up mid-afternoon through evening. We watched a pretty amazing mayfly / white fly hatch happen on the river – swallows skimming the surface, quillback carp rising all across the river in both directions. We weren’t equipped to take advantage but it was a real sight.
The Potomac River below Great Falls is a diverse and challenging fishery for anglers using fly rods. Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders is a Charter Club of the Federation of Fly Fishers representing the interests of local FFF members and the Potomac River.
