Lisa,We have found that it's best to let the river drop to 3 ft or below at the little falls station for safe wading in the Potomac. Here's the website to check:http://waterdata.usgs.gov/md/nwis/uv?site_no=01646500 The river usually doesn't get this low until mid summer, but if you do go out there, go with a friend, a wading staff and it is a good idea to wear a pfd. Until then, fishing from the bank and outlying...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} New To DC and looking for Smallies
First, Safety. The biggest issue is respecting the river. Wading between little-falls and Great-falls is possible, but can be dangerous. The bottom is just like the rocks around the area, jagged with drop offs and places to get your foot caught (which are also places for fish to hide). I personally don't like to fish it when the little falls gauge is above 3.8. Further upstream, the river gets shallower...

Yep -- another fun day with plenty of shad to go around. I was glad we made it out there. I'll probably repurpose the same ff706 soon for bass and bluegill duty. And you're modest Jim -- I think you pulled in more today than everyone within eyeshot put together. No exaggeration. Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Is the shad run over?
No, the shad run is NOT over! Epic day at Fletcher's Cove today (Saturday). Fished 0600 to 1330. Had to leave when my right arm began to go numb from the endless process of, cast-hook up-strip in-boat fish-remove hook-toss fish back- repeat. Only my third time fishing the Potomac shad run but it certainly lived up to the stories I'd heard. Thanks again to Gene for sharing a current seam and leaving some fish for Ron and me (Gene...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} New To DC and looking for Smallies
Hello all, I am looking to make my first trip out to the Potomac next Sat (May 7th) and I'm looking for suggestions on where to wade. I'm aware that the rain may make it difficult to wade next weekend so it could just turn into a scouting trip. I do like to catch fish but I also like to get away from the crowds so I'm not afraid to may a hike to a more secluded fishing hole. Any suggestion on areas I should look into would be...

TPFR Alex M. got some big hickories and an American from shore today. American was just under the surface. Loads of schoolies. Anyone else notice fewer herons than in years past? They used to be all over the river, fighting each other for a good spot. Seems like Vultures outnumber the herons now a days. Fewer snakehead this year too. Good water quality! No, I have to admit to never having kept those critters....so I would just spout empirical evidence based upon where they're found.
