Wire leaders may be a problem - I haven't tested this - but I've taken reels and rods and flies through no problem (not my entire vest but that has a knife etc). I have had a rod case (not a tube - one that holds four three piece rods) routinely counted as a second bag. I also have put rod tubes inside checked baggage without incident. I have found Miami airport security to be sticklers.
