This is my first post to the group, but received a lot of help from people I've met on here! I had the same questions this year (re: floating line). I opted for a sinking polyleader and haven't had any problem getting into a ton of shad. To get down even farther, use heavy weighted flies and casts upstream with mends before you start your swing. No need to buy a sinking line for 1 month/year IMO. Good luck!

Hey guys,I have an Orvis 8wt. with WF floating line and I'm looking forward to coming back to Arlington to get in on this shad and striper run. Can you catch stripers/shad on floating line or do I have to shell out the money to buy sinking line and a new spool to keep it on?Being a broke college student, buying a new spool/sinking line is obviously not ideal. Any feedback would be appreciated.
