{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Reading the River gauges
I was mainly referring to areas like Kelly's Ford on the Rappahannock River and like places. The places were you can legally park and wade and leave the gray areas out of it for now. The thing could always be updated.I sit here and look at the gauges trying to remember what the river level was the last time I waded a particular section of river, like at Riverbend Park. It is a great disappointment to drive 45...
{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tidal Basin anyone?
I'e never had any problem with it. I had one park police office inquire in three years and after talking with him, it was not an issue. I would make sure that it is not high tide due to the water level going over the wall. If your feet are wet, they consider it wading. That being said, I'm pretty sure Snowhite's large snakehead he caught (last year?) was there at high tide. I know everyone states...
{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Reading the River gauges
I think it's a good idea, but beware the current 'WaderGate" situation going on with the Potomac. Posting ideal levels for wading would be equivalent to posting ideal times to park in disabled/loading zones when no one has a disabled tag or is unloading a truck. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Reading the River gauges
I realize that we have a section on google maps with some of the fishing locations.I think that it would be nice if we can create information on the river gauges. What I mean by this is to post out what the "safe" levels are for the river for wading. We could do this for the Potomac River, Rappahannock River, Shenandoah River, and other local fisheries. It would also be helpful to know what the levels are for...
RE: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Indian River Inlet
Awesome! I found sinking line to be a little overkill, unless spey casting. To me even my 10ft sinking tip was too much at low tide. A couple other words of wisdom: 1) Don't let the bait guys give you crap about fishing too close to them. 2) The end of the jetties...
{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Indian River Inlet

Great job Marek! I was also fishing Indian River Inlet that weekend for the first time. While I wasn't dressed appropriately to brave the jetty, I did find space under the bridge and using my 8wt and sinking line, quickly got into some very nice sized hickory shad.I saw a monster speckled trout/weaky landed on conventional gear and a few...

I like a suggestion I heard before.... Wear ear buds and ignore people. That way they think you can't hear them. We were skunked on Monday there as well
My question is what is the policy on fishing infront of the Jefferson memorial beyond the chains and jersey wall. Is it allowed?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Indian Island fishing in Long Island NY
Camping over the last weekend of June at Indian Island county park on Long Island NY. It is located at Flanders Bay that runs into the Great Peconic Bay and the Peconic River. I grew up in the area but I never fished then. I should have access to a canoe so that should help. Anyone have any experience with fishing this area at this time of year. Any suggestions? -- http://www.tpfr.org...
{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Tidal Basin anyone?
Gene, I prefer your suggestion from a past post….Fishing in your wading boots, underwear, a hat and simply BARK! at anyone that gets too close to you. This is why I get along with you, you have the same mentality that I do. Give me a call as I tried calling you but your phone is off. I want to ask you a question or two.Aaron -- http://www.tpfr.org --- ...

Aaron! First order of business is to repel competitors! Some friendly person asks you a question? Answer politely. Another person asks a question 2 minutes later? Still be polite, but make the answer more concise. 3rd person asks a question? You make weedeater sounds and maintain eye contact until they walk away. Really put effort into it -- you want nylon cord gnashing woody vegetation,...
Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} 6th Grade Science Curriculum
Molly,I used to run FYCC and have participated in a ton of kids fishing events for USFWS and Trout in the Classroom. It is easy to keep kids that age engaged in fishing really. Jim is an excellent contact and Trout in the Classroom is a great program. They do a final outing with some of the schools where they release the fish and learn a little fly casting. There is also the National Fishing in Schools Program - http://www.fishinginschools.org/....
Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} 6th Grade Science Curriculum
I've done some work with "fishing in schools" with Katie Cole. It's a great program. http://www.fishinginschools.org/default.html I helped "train the trainer" a couple years ago. We were teaching teachers and PE teachers how to fly fish so they could instruct the students. It was a two day course. I'm sure she'd be happy to talk to you/share resources or best practices. Hope this helps. Also if you're looking for volunteers to...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Tidal Basin anyone?
I have the afternoon off on Thursday and plan to fish the Tidal Basin starting around 2 pm until dark. I don't know about anyone else but I've ben skunked more times that I want to admit here but I can't seem to give up on the place. I know people catch fish all the time here and I consider it a personal challenge to catch some large size fish here. It also doesn't hurt just how close...

Thanks Dalton! We do take the kids to the Philip Merrill CBF site in Annapolis. We did some seine netting (kids loved it), I never thought to ask them about a more individual approach. I'm sending out a feeler message for ideas about teaching 6th graders how to fish. Next year, I'll teach an estimated 60, 6th graders. Every year we do something called Chesapeake Week, where we take a week or two of intensive study to focus on our watershed. This year was my first year at the school and I kind of ran with the established program. Next year I would really like to improve upon the curriculum and add in a few...
