I was out Saturday morning at Fletcher's. Picked up a shad from the rocks. It looked like something took a chunk out of its gill cover. Never seen that kind of damage before. Tied into a nice fish up by the waterfall. Not sure what it was, but it was a pretty even match for an 8 weight with a 13lb leader. I'm thinking it could have...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Anyone venture on to the Potomac this weekend?

Impatient is right! I was at Fletcher's all day Saturday, lots of other boats in the water as well as people fishing from shore. I fished through the morning with no luck, but by the afternoon I found a small school and caught about 10 Hickory Shad very quickly, had several others that spit the fly before I could get them to the...
{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Anyone venture on to the Potomac this weekend?
I went out on saturday for a bit around the end of low tide. Water was low then as it was before the rain really hit. I didn't catch anything, thought I might have had a couple bumps. Heard reports of a few fish being caught but nothing great yet. I didn't bother getting a boat and just fished a couple spots from shore upstream of fletchers. This was my first time fishing a full sinking line...

I always wondered about Dolly Sods -- we have friends who backpack there ALL the time and said there's a stream, but I didn't know if it was fishable. You might try hitting the streams closer to the headwaters along Skyline -- I've had at least one good trip immediately following a hard rain and posted a report about it last fall. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Have boat, want to fish
I recently moved my skiff into the city and am looking to fish as much as possible this season. I'm new to fishing, fly and spinning, in this part of the Potomac from a boat. Don't want to dampen your spirits, but will the fish be awake yet given this long cold winter? Jeremy's Run is a well known stream but since you have to hike a while to get to it, it doesn't get as much pressure. It can be great in spring when the water's up higher, but I normally fish it a bit later to give the water time to warm up. I'm assuming many of the tribs are dumping in near freezing water right...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} FYI Canal Road at Reservoir road work
I just googled it. The road looks to be sinking on the westbound side of Canal Rd right in front of the entrance to Fletcher's. This doesn't look good. Engineers are "very concerned with the structural integrity of the road". This doesn't sound good. If the road is considered unsafe it will be blocked off so what neighborhood can I park in to hike down to fletchers?

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Line Maintenance
I don't know anything about the Access lines, but I'm sure plenty on here use them.Personally, I typically just keep the warm water line on a plastic spool and swap lines if I'm heading south. The cold-water WFF I have seems to have a much wider temperature range than the warm water line (SA Sharkwave GPX and an old model-unknown Rio, respectively). I would imagine that something with a braided core might have an even better/wider...
Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Line Maintenance
It's the Orvis Access 8 wt fly line. I didn't know how big an impact the temperature had - but that makes sense. I've been using it through the winter to hang a nymph below a strike indicator at 4MR when I'm going after carp. I find I lose a lot less flies than when I use a sinking line there. So it sounds like this is just something I'll have to deal with in the winter. Am I damaging the line at all or...
Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Line Maintenance
Rich nailed it. If the line memory is really, really bad in cool to cold weather, you probably have a warm water/tropical line. Unfortunately for us consumers, the technology isn't there yet to have a line that will work well for cold water fish like striper and trout/salmon/steelhead while also being a good fit for going after bonefish, snook, tarpon, redfish, etc. Your sinking line, as many are, is probably made for cooler water...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Line Maintenance
Question about fly line care: My floating line has a lot of "memory" you could say. Each time I use it it comes off the reel very stiff and holds some serious coils rather than straightening out. I find I have to stretch it by hand to get it to straighten out at all. Is there a way to avoid this? Or a product that will help keep it "softer"? It doesn't happen with my sinking line, just the floating - why...
