I agree with TurbinBlade about the real gem being the brook trout in Shenandoah National Park.  I've been fishing weekly all winter with decent success.  This is a picture of the best of a 10 fish day on the Hazel River on February 4.  It's about an 1.5 hour ride to the park from Fairfax.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Bucktail minnows work - I've been remiss

I decided to put those 34007s I got from Rich a while back to good use the other day and forced myself to tie "bucktail" minnows (Yuck) with very, very SPARSE wings.  I mean, wings with so few fibers (hand-stacked a bit) that you could count them.

They work pretty darn well afterall -- I suspect I disliked them because I tied them poorly.  I'm a believer in the "Gartside principle", that fish are stupid and tend to "see what they want to see" with a fly pattern.  I think the sparse wing provides enough, but not too much to seem artificial if that makes sense.

My hands froze and were tomatoes, but you can stand there like a goon and pull out fish on nearly every cast.

I hate winter -- I think I'll drive to Covington tomorrow, get trapped on the other side of the stream, and have to run up the Gathright steps while Beth meets me at the top .  Then we'll speed off without anyone seeing our license plate!  Wait, that was last September!  "Government officials only" ---suckers!

Gene

PS -- if adding lead eyes to a bucktail fly that people were fishing for X years with bead chain and calling it after yourself is par-for-the-course with fly fishing people, consider me a meat-fishing, tenkara guy!

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Where to go fishing.

You know something?  Trout fishing sucks this time of year.  Check the bed of your truck and your boots are probably frozen, so you gotta jam 'em under the floor vent and run the sucker for another 10 minutes so you can get your feet into them.  You also want some hand warmers and a change of clothes in case you slip off the Falls Rd. bridge.  Bring 2 sets for the Savage.

You can get some fish on streamers or maybe midges or #20-24 BWOs, but the effort/gasoline > production ratio still sucks.

IMO the real gem of "trout" in this region are the brookies in the SNP region.  It's kind of unique, whereas the rainbow/brown trout are more artificial and cramped.  It's kind of cold now, but once it picks up in the spring there's nothing else I'd rather be doing.

You could fish the outfalls -- those produce 100 small LMB, crappie, and various other sunfish species.  It did today anyway.  I had to break a huge sheet of ice to reach the outfall, but it was a pretty productive day....if you're happy with bass that you can backcast with an 8-weight.

VA: Mossy, Beaver, Holmes Run (if it gets stocked again)

Or just wait for the shad run...

microcenter has some heatshrink tubing, but I'm not sure what types they carry.  It's in bulk back with the "build your own computer" stuff.

If you order some, I'm sure some of us might want some too.  Are you starting to splice your own' lines too?
