I agree with TurbinBlade about the real gem being the brook trout in Shenandoah National Park.  I've been fishing weekly all winter with decent success.  This is a picture of the best of a 10 fish day on the Hazel River on February 4.  It's about an 1.5 hour ride to the park from Fairfax.
