Orvis actually has a free fly fishing 101 and 201 class. That's actually what I had my girlfriend do to get her started. It isn't completely on-the-water (only 201 is on the water), but I highly recommend it. If you prefer right on the water immediately, look up Rob Snowhite. He's a full-time fly fishing guide in the DC area (and very active on the boards here). He's great both from a guiding perspective and from an education perspective. We plan to fund raise a bit off of this, so there will be a small ticket fee to partake in the tasting. If you like a particular spirit, please consider purchasing a glass from the bar to support our host (Whitlow's) as well. If things go well with this tonight, expect to see Neale and his choice libations at many future BEER TIES!

Additionally, our anniversary party is typically when we "pass the plate" for a Spring Fund Raiser, so please bring an offering if you can in cash or check form. Melody has official TPFR letterhead donation receipts that she can give you for tax purposes right on the spot.  As you know, whatever you give will only be poured right back into the club, so helping us helps you! We'll have a raffle as usual, so bring cash for a few tickets ($1 for 1 ticket or $5 for 6).

I am also SUPER EXCITED to report that we now have some awesome, high quality TPFR stickers for sale for $2 each or $5 for 3. Did I ever tell you I like stickers! Be sure to buy few and put them everywhere - rod tubes, stripping baskets, strangers cars, Metro stations, etc. We also have TPFR hats in stock again, in any color you want as long as it's brown (other options presently on back order). Hats are $20 each.

I am looking forward to a record crowd tonight at Whitlow's. I know the Nats are playing, but that's a daytime game. Consider it a warm up for the main event - BEER TIE!

Had an older gentleman come into the shop looking for some 0x, so I asked him if he wanted some shad flies. "Those aren't shad flies," he said.

A few days later he came back with a box -- "Now here's some shad flies." They look like tiny salmon flies to me, but whatever. He said his dad grew up in New Hampshire and moved down here after the first world war. Apparently, back then it was major expedition to get back north for fishing, so anglers from New England adapted the techniques and tactics to whatever was around. The box was his dad's, back in the day.

He let me take a couple photos of the flies with my phone -- some of them were falling apart when I got them out of the box. I gather some of these patterns are a century or so old, but probably Tommy's Torpedoes or Snowhite's flies are way more effective. I thought they would be interesting for the more history/tradition-minded anglers -- sorry I'm just now getting them posted.

By far the best part of working in a fishing shop is older guys telling me how much better everything used to be.
