Just got back from floating the South Fork of the Flathead. Flew United and carried two rods on. If bringing a backpack, just strap them to the sides and remove them before entering the plane.

I fly with two rod tubes (4pc rods) a few times a year, put them in the
overhead. Never had an issue.
