Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: CASTING CHURCH - Sun 10 April

Pete—I use either a OSTP Commando or Rio Gamechanger sinking head with an S8/9 sink tip. Getting hung up on the bottom is a part of getting deep. But that is where the shad are! Hi PeterYes, Spey casting can be used for shad on the Potomac.  In fact it opens up areas on shore that are otherwise not conducive to fly fishing, like Gordon's and Walkers.  But you do need a sink tip to get the flies down.  I've done it and caught shad. I also had a lot of fun Spey casting at Falmouth Park on the Rapp this past Sunday with some folks from Orvis. I've taken Spey lessons from Regan and he's...

Hey Regan:I'm super interested in Spey—and, in fact, will have a blog coming out in VA's DWR fishing newsletter soon on trout Spey that I wrote recently (as a newcomer to the style). I'll share it with the group when it runs—and you can correct my errors!I'm hoping to make the clinic—and really interested in whether it can be applied to shad fishing in the Potomac (?).  Thanks,Dr. Peter Brookes"DC foreign policy geek...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} BEER TIE - Mon 11 Apr

Fantastic. We'll be tying Clouser Minnows in different sizes for the next two beer ties. If people want to tie shad flies I will have the material for those too. Sent from my iPhoneOn Mar 30, 2022, at 10:21 PM, Regan Burmeister <reganebur@gmail.com> wrote:Monday 11 April will be our Beer-Tie at Colony Grill.  Shad season is upon us. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} BEER TIE - Mon 11 Apr

Monday 11 April will be our Beer-Tie at Colony Grill.  Shad season is upon us. People are catching smallmouth and stripers. West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland are stocking streams on a regular basis.Come on out and meet your fellow anglers, bring your fly tying material, your fly tying questions, your fly fishing questions. Always fun to discuss what are the best patterns for each species.Festivities will begin...

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} CASTING CHURCH - Sun 10 April

We will have our casting get together on Sunday, 10 April at Fletcher's Cove from 8am to 11am. Perhaps you have heard the term "spey casting".  You have been curious, what does pet sterilization have to do with fly casting? To clear that up, the sterilization is 'spay', not 'spey', though pronounced the same.  'Spey' actually refers to the Spey River in Scotland. We will have a focus group on spey casting...

The large tree in front of the outflow would fix the problem, but the shopping carts so create cover. On Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 8:49:19 PM UTC-4 Miles wrote:VA DEQ reports 4MR has some 'impairments': chlordane in fish tissue and E. {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Presque Isle Smallmouth Bass

Vladimir- the smallmouth are in shallow as part of their spawning behavior, so dates tend to be related to water temp. (although moon phase probably has something to do with it too). I've fished smallies in PIB and the Erie tribs (they run up the creeks like steelhead) from late April through mid May. The bay is usually earlier than the tribs, but it can depend. If you fish them in the tributary creeks YOU MUST, BY LAW, not target...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Dredging Four Mile Run

VA DEQ reports 4MR has some 'impairments': chlordane in fish tissue and E. Coli everywhere. It also flags PCBs in fish tissue, but that's everywhere in the tidal Potomac watershed. I don't know enough to say how that would affect disposal of the sediment, but given that chlordane was banned in 1988 and they're still finding it in fish, it probably means there's still a decent amount of it in the river bottom. -Miles On Thursday,...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Dredging Four Mile Run

This is correct.  After the Corps built the initial project, the local entity is responsible for maintaining it.  Part of that maintenance is making sure it continues to pass the flows that it was designed for.  i doubt it is currently doing that which is why they need to clean it out. As far as the sediment, I imagine that it will go to a landfill or something, but i do wonder how polluted it really is. ...

Some I do on the bridges: https://www.fourmilerun.org/2022/03/bridges-of-lower-four-mile-run-updates.html?m=1As for the sediment removal it will be considered toxic and stored somewhere or buried. I worked on a similar issue where mercury leaked into a office building onsite sewage treatment facility. All of the gravel and sand was trucked off somewhere for storage. Hoping the boat ramp on four mile is updated to get...

Any time the Army Corps is involved in flood control it is typically utilitarian, but that is not to say the localities cannot push to incorporate other features such as "meander" and fish habitat. Hopefully they get a chance to put some bonus features in the flood control project. On Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at 10:52:08 PM UTC-4 Miles wrote:So around fifteen years ago Alexandria and Arlington put together an amazing plan to revitalize...

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Dredging Four Mile Run

So around fifteen years ago Alexandria and Arlington put together an amazing plan to revitalize 4MR. The drawings are beautiful. They're like those sci-fi movies where the poor people have to live in one place and the rich people live somewhere so much nicer that it's oppressive. The drawings look like the rich place. Eleven years ago I went to a public meeting about how they were ready to get to work. It was pretty exciting:...
