{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Four Mile Run

Stopped by 4MR today on the incoming tide. Wanted to see what damage if any was caused by last week's flood. Water was extremely clear from Mt. Vernon down toward Eads st. Maybe saw a dozen bass and redbreast sunfish. I lost one very large largie at the outflow. Thought the subtle tug was just the force of the water in the outflow. The fish never showed itself again.

I walked around to fish the other side by the soccer field by the short canal. There were only two fish along the grates. Another very large bass showed up but showed no interest in either flies I was using.

Looks like some of the sand moved out of the outflow last weekend. Shoreline plants were all broken and facing downstream. Not a lot of litter on shore or in water.

I stopped off at Holmes Run to collect some invertebrates for my aquarium. No sign of fish. Water was half a foot higher than two weeks ago. Some sort of heavy machinery was brought in to clear the first crossing from debris from last week's flood. I passed one spin angler that had no luck. I managed to collect a few water pennies, scuds, cress bugs, aquatic worms, and two damsel nymphs.

In case you hadn't been to the warm water outflow lately, the attached picture shows the rather dramatic change in the creek structure from summer high water events.  In the picture the left hand side is upstream from opposite the outflow and the right side is looking downstream.   The moon said I should have been catching fish around noon today but only saw some bait fish. The area just down from the outflow is quite shallow now. The deep hole that used to be at the outflow is gone and maybe 40% of the flow moves towards the Alexandria side.  As usual the tidal drop in the creek there is about 2 hours ahead of the river. I'm thinking about going back about noon tomorrow with the intent of exploring a little further downstream. Looks like what used to be a quick trip to the outflow to catch a few bluegills might be a thing of the past.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Newbie here

Hi Konstantin,

In  few months the Potomac will have an incredibly large run of American and Hickory Shad and you can fish the river at Fletcher's Cove Boathouse, usually walk upstream to the rocky areas, pick a rock, and cast a sinking line as far as you can! They are quite fun on a 6-8wt rod. I just got a 4wt Trout Spey that should be a blast for them.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fly fishing in Anguilla

My wife and I have plans to vacation in Anguilla in mid-March and I was hoping to get in a couple days of fishing. We went a few years ago and FF options were tough to find as it seemed almost all charter or guided fishing was on reefs or trolling.

I've done some recent internet searches and it's not been as fruitful as I hoped. With some more research I think I could DIY but would like to do 1 day with a guide.

Any ideas or suggestions?

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: The Keys / Delray

I've never fished around Delray, but I have fished the keys alot.  If you haven't fished flats before, I would recommend giving some serious thought to what your goals are for the trip. They keys are a tough place to fish for bonefish if you haven't done it.  There aren't as many fish as there used to be, and the ones that are there are pretty demanding.  If you want to catch one, by all means go for it but if you want more likely action be sure to find a guide who does other stuff and be sure to let him know your goals for the trip.  There may be more options for that type of fishing in other parts of florida further north of the keys.  The everglades could be one option.

February can be tough as well.  If the wind lays down the tarpon fishing can be really good though.  There might be a couple days in a typical february where that is the case.

Can you narrow it down a little? Delray is north of Boca, and the Keys can be as close as 1 hour away (Key Biscayne) to 4+ hours (Key West).

Did you want to keep it closer to the mainland, or go all out and drink margaritas in the conch republic?

Ash, I second Tom's suggestion for Cabin Branch, and would also recommend going Sunday. There is a lot of farmland in the watershed and it's going to get MUDDY after the rain. I've had zero success on the main stem in winter when the water is muddy. The tributaries will clear up sooner.

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fishing after the rain

Was my home water for almost 20 years.  In general it will be high and dirty, but if you go further up or try Cabin Branch, which is a smaller tributary, you may have some luck.

From Rt 97 take 650 going w/nw then make a right on Hipsley Mill.  You will come to a bridge - that is the Patuxent you can try up or down stream.  If that does not look good you can cross the river and keep going.  Hipsley Mill intersects with Annapolis Rock Rd.  This is where you can enter Cabin Branch and fish south back towards the Patuxent.

You can also go further up the Patuxent there are several intersections that cross the river.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fishing after the rain

Patuxent can be pretty flashy - meaning it will rise and fall quickly with rain. It is low and clear now, and rain will help the fishing. But, it may be blown out Saturday morning and may not start receding until Saturday evening. Sunday may be good for fishing.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Fishing after the rain

Hi all,

Curious to get your thoughts on fishing a small stream like the Patuxent River in northern Montgomery County after a storm that dumps 1.5 inches of rain. Will the stream get blown out? If so, think it might be better by Sunday? I've got a new rod and reel I'm itching to use!

Thanks!
Ash

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Illustrators?

Do we have anyone in the group who likes to illustrate things? I am not gifted in the visual arts. I have enough coordination to put together a PB&J, which translates well to fly tying (I'm echoing a Dan Davala sentiment here), but sketching and doodling have never come naturally to me. I'd like to collaborate with someone if interested. Thanks!

Spring, Summer and Fall are the best for the Potomac in DC, but you can certainly find active fish this time of year.  It will be cold and slow, but doable.  I tend to turn to musky, pickerel, and trout this time of year, but there is a 1-2 hour drive for most of these (not center of the city haha).

This sounds like a good time to me. As someone celebrating 20 something years of sobriety (I lost count!), I too have found recent Beer Ties a little too Beery and not enough Tie to hold my interest. No judgment on those who do indulge, it's just not my thing for reasons I prefer not to get into.

As it happens, I also tie a coachman variant that is effective in the park, although mine is orange. I plan to be at the next tie with bobbin in hand.

On a related note, someone might could update our website with the dates for 2020. I didn't see any.

{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Beer TIE

Thanks Art. Looking forward to tying with you again. Royal Wulffs are actually more along the line of what I had in mind, so let's give it a go and compare notes!

Great suggestions Cary. I'd love to see an example of that blue tinsel coachman. As I mentioned, I'll be doing a standard pattern with maybe a few convenient substitutions this time, but I have seen some yummy parachute variations in fly shops. Stimmy version would be deadly too I'm sure.

Kevin, I hope to be doing this all year long, so there oughtta be plenty of opportunities to tie along. Looking forward to seeing you at the next one you can make.

Have tied as a parachute. Also might I suggest as a stimulator style. Also quite effective. And tie a variant for the park with blue crystal flash in place of peacock herl. Will be away for work so tie some for me would ya!

Re: {Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Beer TIE

Misha,

Unfortunately I will be out of town, otherwise would like to learn how to tie a Royal Coachman from you.  I am one of those that generally tie at the beer tie, sometimes learning from Rob (What a great resource!), sometimes building my own inventory, and sometimes just talking and learning about fly fishing in the area.  It has been my limited experience, that most of the beer conversations have been fly fishing focused.

In either case, as a relative novice in the fly fishing world, I have come to look forward the beer/tie for all the comraderie that I find there.

Tightlines,
Kevin

Hey everybody. There's lot of opinions floating around these days about the future of TPFR. I don't really want to get into it here in this thread, but one thought I have is to get back to our roots. And I've noticed that lately, our meetings have trended towards more emphasis on the BEER than the TIE. So, for 2020, I am resolving to tie at every meeting I attend. I'll post the fly or theme I'll tie in advance if anyone wants to tie along.

I'm going to start in February tying a Royal Coachman. Random, I know, but I don't have any in my box and it's an amazing attractor pattern that also looks cool. Note that this fly can be tied as both a dry and a wet. I'll probably tie the dry, but if anyone would demonstrate the wet that would be super cool too. Has anyone ever tied it as a parachute??
