{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: Telescoping fly rod?

I travel for work and in one trip started in the Bermuda and finished (after going through Portland and Victoria BC in trout season) in Kitimiat BC during a steelhead run. My solution is to just always throw two decent 4 piece rods in a multi rod tube and travel with them. Typically I travel with a 5wt and an 8 or 9wt. I try to predict my travels as well, for example I'm headed out on a work trip that will start in San Juan and end in Nassau, so this trip I'm just bringing a 8wt for bones and a 9/10 for everything else. I also bring my good reels, you never know what you'll see, my last trip I was sent somewhere with GTs and hooked into one, and was glad I had a good rod and reel despite loosing the fish. Lastly I carry my rod tube and put all my other gear in my carry on, never below.

If you are looking for a commuter rod, I have a 4 piece 7'6 3wt reddington hydrogen that packs tiny (I keep it in a backseat storage area in my tacoma) and is a blast to cast, pairs well with a reddington zero 2/3, and I used to throw a tenkara rod in my nathan's running pack when I went on longer runs in rock creek park.

One of my big concerns with the reyr rods is that everything is internal, seems like a lot of friction, and what do you do to reline the thing? I swap lines so frequently that it'd be a PITA to messenger a line through the rod all the time.

Hey all,

I'm curious if you've found a good telescoping fly rod or if there's a blank (i.e., Tenkara) you would recommend to convert into a fly rod? One of the reasons I don't fish more often is that I don't have a car and it's a pain in the butt to carry a rod tube everywhere. Interested in something more commuter backpack friendly but would also allow me to practice my casts.

If there's not a good option, I'd like to take a crack at making one out of something else.
