Friends of Fletchers Cove
February 2016 Update
While it may not feel like it, the shad run at Fletchers Cove is just weeks away. Rain and snowmelt from the January blizzard raised the Potomac River to nearly ten feet at the Little Falls gauge last week. The Cove weathered the highest water level in four years.
Thanks to the efforts of the Fletchers Cove staff, the main dock was moved from its mooring, secured in calmer water and returned to its place over a 72-hour period. Despite showing its age, the dock survived the strong current and requires only normal maintenance. Meanwhile, the floating walkway installed by the National Park Service last year remained in place and suffered no visible damage, but now rests higher on the newly deposited four to six inches of silt.
While not surprising, the aftermath of the February freshet serves as a stark reminder that new sediment continues to elevate the Cove's infrastructure and gradually choke off our longstanding access to the Potomac River.
Friends of Fletchers Cove continues to actively fundraise for the first phase of remediation at the Cove. Thank you to our supporters who have helped us raise 8% of our $150,000 goal in just a few months, money needed for the core and bore sampling that will qualify our debris for relocation. Please join them and donate now or to see how you can help.
