Are switch rods usually rated with single hand line weights or spey line weights?  When I first read the question, I assumed 8wt was for a single hand weight, but 500grains seems like a spey line weight for an 8wt.

Does it depend on manufacturer?  I thought I saw single hand weight ratings on some switch rods.

SWEET ROD - nice gift!  Well, we rate that rod for 500 grains for skagit, but I've cast it with more.  Key piece of data is your intention to toss some pretty good size flies.  Simply put, it takes mass to move mass, so depending on how beefy the flies are you may want to err on the slightly heavy side.  525 might be a good compromise.

John Bilotta has pretty much every head produced for the last five years or so.  It may be in your best interest to hit him up for a lesson/ line selection session.  That way, you can get your technique right, then switch out heads in 25 grain increments until you get the feel you personally like.  Best to bring along some of your large patterns too.  Chucking yarn is a bit different than large flies.  To get the big stuff to fly, it can sometimes take an adjustment on anchor placement and tip selection.  It's amazing the impact that either can have.  Have fun in the process, you'll most likely end up with several different heads to do different work which will make for an incredibly versatile setup.

Actually, 500-550 is right in the wheelhouse of most modern #8 switch rods.  I toss a 450 on my #7 and it could take more if needed.  If you check out the current RIO line recs, most #8 switches are somewhere between 475 and 575 depending on  manufacturer.  Maybe the OP can shed some light on the actual rod model.  What did you get Danny?

What the heck are you doing with it that you are planning on throwing flies that big?

But I agree, Skagit head is the way to go.  Not sure which one without knowing exactly what rod it is. 550 seems like an awful lot for a switch.

Happy holidays everyone,

Got a new rod for Christmas. I'm need of a line now. It's a 8 weight switch rob I plan on throwing 4 to 6 inch streamers with heavy sink tips and big nymph set ups. Any suggestions for a line?

Thanks,
