BW - are you a member of Trout Unlimited? If so I would suggest you look up local Phoenix-area chapters and see if there's a member who might point you to the good trout streams there. The Gila trout is a native trout to the national forest (as well as the Apache trout I believe but much rarer), but you will also find cutthroat up there I believe. Definitely bring a flyrod - 4wt with you. Just check the regs - things may be different after the wildfires there a couple years back.

If you're in Phoenix and Gila seems too remote, head up to Sedona (2 hr drive) and fish Oak Creek. Its just beautiful with the red rocks above you and the wary trout below you.
Good luck!

I'm thinking about doing a back country camping trip in Gila National Forest in NM. Figured I'd bring my fly rod. Anyone ever been or done any fishing out there?
