{Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders} Re: local spots to fly fish

This time of year your options along the Potomac are getting limited - the water out there is getting too cold.

Go fish 4 Mile on an outgoing tide - that focuses the warm water in the deeper parts of the run on the Northern bank - you'll see it if you go 2 to 3 hours after the Potomac River high tide.  I was there last Saturday around 2:30 pm and I lost count of the Green Sunfish and Bluegills I caught.  Mix in a few Pumpkinseeds and the odd Large Mouth Bass and I melted away the week's worth of work stress.  Other guys regularly posting have pictures of tilapia, channel cats, carp, goldfish and walleye.

I do not recall any posts here of any issues wading at 4MR... I've done it for two winters now and have not had any issues.

DO NOT GO THERE IF IT HAS RAINED EXCESSIVELY OR IT THE NEWS REPORTS A SEWAGE SPILL - the outfall is from a sewage plant... catching fish is cool, catch E. coli bacterium is not cool.

Check with the Virginia and Maryland Natural Resource Dept websites.  Their trout stocking schedules will help you get into more fish also.

Lastly - there are casting clinics that the senior members of this forum put on periodically - and the free advice on improving your casting will make your outings more enjoyable (and less a wrestling match with your line and rod).  There are also the monthly Beer Ties at Whitlow's (check out the events portion of this forum).  They teach anyone how to tie a few different flies and drink beer.

Good luck!

My sons and I are new to fly fishing (just purchased kits) and wanted to ask for advice on fishing at the Four Mile Run warm water discharge site. Is it legal/feasible to get in the water there w/ waders? Also, any other suggested close-in locations to fish along the Potomac/tributaries would be much appreciated. Thanks. MB
